I don't know anything about it but we need to hire one and I heard that some people get deffensive when used the wrong terminology.

It depends on the field.
In general a designer sets the general concept and
is responsible for it being efficient and workable.
The detailer, (as the name implys), ensures that all
the small problems are solved and that all small
parts work together properly.
In Engineering, both must be highly qualified.

A designer gives a broad idea of what everything should look like. For example how many sofas, etc...
A detailer goes into DETAIL... In other words... the furniture color or the shades of green on the wall and the center piece on the table... Hope it helps
