Its not just used to save game progress and vids, music etc... it is also used to buffer games to lower the load time so that you do not have to wait so long between levels or in some cases completely doing away with levels due to the ps3 accessing the hard drive instead of the disc for files. This can drastically cut down long loads.

It's for the memory. You save games on the harddrive like you would memory cards. If you surf the net, you can also save videos, songs, photos, etc.

yes but the hard drive isnt for playing it, its for saving it. Any progress you make will have to be saved somewhere. Same as the computer you are on.

You can save games on the hard drive.
You can download demos, trailers, etc. to the hard drive.
You can buy games from the PSN and save it to the hard drive.
You can get free games (Gran Turismo HD concept) and download it to the hard drive.
You can use the hard drive to save pictures, movies, etc.
Some games might use the hard drive just to load games faster.

you use it the same way as a mamory card in ps2. it holds saved games, u can download movies to it. and you can also downlaod games from the market place on it. it also holds you network setting and and online updates for games
