Ask yourselves, "Who are the GREATEST atheists?" Once you get the answers, in terms of a list, to THAT question, considering the one-word answer to THIS question ought to be REALLY easy!

The KEY word to the question is as follows: GREATEST. Sure, you can claim that reason or logic are "contributions," but neither of these is the GREATEST contribution.

You "great thinkers" are working with small minds! Think on a global scale - that doesn't mean the answer is "the realization of AGW!" *laughter*

Forgive me! The term "greatest" is not in the question. Forgive me for the omission. Consider this a second-chance, perhaps.

Atheism's contribution to society is not allowing people to be satisfied with a "Goddidit" attitude.
If it were left up to the people who historically have rejected and refused to accept science (the religious) we'd still be believing that the Earth is flat, and is the center of the universe. We'd also most likely still be living in clay huts and not surviving past the ripe old age of 40.
It's pretty clear what *YOU'RE* looking for in an answer, but sorry, you're not correct. (And the condescending tone of your question doesn't make you any more correct. It just makes you condescending.)

Science. Education. Knowledge. Technological advancement. Medical advancement. Atheists, and scientists (of which the majority are Atheist) think outside the box. Without them, you wouldn't have anything that you do right now and you'd still be living in the Dark Ages.
How about religion? What has religion contributed to civilization other than fear and sorrow and a promotion that education is a bad thing?

Atheism's contribution is in the future, when atheism will dominate metaphysics. It will be replaced by nihilism and then by "happy nihilism." Much happier, the people of that time will laugh at their theistic follies and the incredible irony of fighting for the affections of a being who cannot possibly exist. There will be no Holy Land and no Holy Wars. There will be greater peace, prosperity and happiness, but never a utopia.

As individuals, atheists have done their share like other individuals.
As a Group, Atheism has contributed nothing.

To answer that you need to think about what Christianity's contribution to society has been.
No the contribution of Christians, but what has the actual religion itself done to better humanity?
A short list, IMHO.
For a longer list, what has it done to retard civilization?
Atheism dos not contribute to society, but it does remove some of the roadblocks that dogmatic religion puts in civilization's path.

What is the contribution to civilization from not believing in leprechauns?
What an odd question?
You should word it. How has theism retarded civilization? Now this is a much less convoluted question.

Given that atheism isn't a "thing" so much as a "lack of thing" ... assigning values like contribution to it isn't technically valid.
That aside though... you're looking at it...
Without atheism... at the very least we'd still be in the Dark Ages.
