Yes they were.

They left England based on "religious persecution" and as soon as they arrived began persecution on Indian religions, outlawed Catholicism, whipped Quakers forcing them to "convert", any religion that was not theirs was wrong, outlawed and untolerable.

Then to keep their own people in line they had little things like witch hunts that took place in more then Salem (Salem was just the most famous because of the play the Crucible)

yes and no. not as much as traditionally portrayed (at least in the early days. Salem was a deviation from even their norms).
