is it the moral consiquences, the legal, or are they just to lazy to be bothered to do it? Are religious people more or less likely to kill? and can they justify it easier, (as the bible says that kill is fine, but murder is not)

people generally choose to cooperate, and to get along peacefully. this has been true of virtually every culture, religion, ethnicity, or region, whether or not an authority exists to keep order. But the exceptions are the instances that stand out in perceptions.

I think those with genuine appreciation for God tend to be moral and civil, but I recognize that soem use God as an excuse to push their will onto others. I find that even more reprehensible than denying God at all.

What keeps people moral is the fact that we live in a society. As societal creatures, we are better equipped as a group to live in a world than we would be living alone.

Living in groups, we find that the things which support the survival of the group support the survival of the individuals. That is the essence of morality.

The inherent stability imposed by a well-functioning, civilized society. Given that stability and strength, society itself will rebel against rogue elements such as those who would take life. It is like the immune system in the body. It could be explained in purely evolutionary and social terms, without the invokation of "morals" or "religion."

Well for me one time it was my neighbor.
Lets just say I know what it means to "snap"...I understand that concept.
Anyways on a day to day basis I think it is my morals. I also figure if I kill someone I am the one who ends up paying the ultimate price and no one is worth it to me.

I would think it's at least partially a function of our higher cognitive abilities to "be in the other person's shoes." Imagination at work, giving us compassion. (Which is to say, the development of a consience such as can be observed in most societal species.)

But also a function of socialization, or morality. The legal consequences are for people who are not socialized into morality.

Respect for human life and an understanding of the value of every person on the earth should be the starting point for anyone and an understanding and respect for God above all else.

Nothing.

You could make it a lot harder to do by banning technology that makes it easy to murder from half way around the world by the push of a button.

If people had to use their bare hands, there would be less murder in the world.

A better question is not what stop people from murdering, but why do they do it. Essentially murder is not a common activity, regardless of what TV/media tells us, most people do not refrain themselves from murder just because it's wrong or illegal.
