Irony is what actually happens and which is not like expected. Irony is usually humorous.
Ex:
Ken, Emily, and Jane are preparing a presentation for class. Ken is really serious while Emily and Jane are just eating some pizza and joking.
Ken: Come here and do something. Do you think you're here so that we eat pizza and joke?!
Them: Yeah. (SURPRISE! That was not expected... and it's funny!)

irony is when something happens that is unexpected. Have you ever read Romeo and Juliet. that play is full of irony. if there is an unexpected ending to a movie that is irony.
but there are 3 types of irony. verbal, dramatic, and situational.
verbal- when you say something you dont mean
if you see someone that has really nerdy pants up to HERE and you go up to him and say ' hey nice pants' that is irony b/c you really didn't mean that.
dramatic- when we know something that the character of a story or play knows.
THink soap operas
situational-when something happens that is the opposit of what you think will happen
When tell on your brother of sister but you are the one who gets in trouble.

When something id funny and it's not supposed to be!Like you can find something comical in something that is quiet serious like "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or "the Larry Sanders Show", both good satirists poking fun at serious issues!

In my opinion, irony is synonymous to sarcasm.
From the web:
IRONY
- witty language used to convey insults or scorn
- A meaning (often contradictory) concealed behind the apparent meaning of a word or phrase.
- refers to the use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning.
Here are some examples of irony in everyday life:

I would like to know that to (just because I am British doesn't mean I get it), as far as I am aware it is like sarcasm but more subtle.
