Oh! This is a horrible - NERVOUS habit, but I used to do it. The important thing to remember is that even when you think your hands are clean, there are all these tiny little nasty bacteria that live under your fingernails. You can try that nasty tasting fingernail polish and all that. To me, that's kind of like telling the alcoholic to take the antibuse, they just won't do it if they want to drink. LOL. Just find yourself another habit - like sucking on lemon drops - or a good sugar free hard candy - maybe a sugar free chewing gum you like. One thing I like to tell people that astonishes them every time - if you're going to chew on some nails - chew on your toe nails - they're filled with much less bacteria!

Apply a product call "Diika Marie" (phonetic), if you can find it , try Indian food store, it is not harmful but it taste terrible, people in India use it to break this habit of their children.
In USA go to a pharmacy and ask, they have some things very similar but I cannot remember the name.
Think of other things like mittens or gloves. This habit can make you really sick.
So do any thing to break it, try any thing, that suits your life style.

I opened this question because I am a nail biter and wanted to see what some solutions may be (was actually gnawing on my finger when I came across the question). I clicked on the youtube video and THANK YOU to whoever posted that. OH MY GOSH!!! I can't imagine putting my fingers in my mouth again. My stomach is churning just thinking about it. Next time I go to put my fingers in my mouth, I will certainly think about that video.

If you looked at the live micro-organisms and bacteria under your fingernails with a microscope you would never bite them again...these are what you are putting in your mouth.

Your pharmacist (or drug store) should have some revolting tasting clear (non glossy) nailpolish you can use, which should discourage you from chewing your fingers.
Or try sitting in front or a mirror at home!

Hi there...
Maybe my answer may sound funny..but ..what I say is.......
go on chewing...go on chewing....as if today is the end of the world......let the finger get abrasions ans contusions....then infections....then you go doctor...get treated....then you will learn...and you will stop this habit...
another solution is....
after every "chew", smell your finger....it will smell....."yummy...yummy"......is n't it ?
go ahead...continue it.....enjoy...
"as if today is the end of the world".........
best wishes !
