Should be made to walk or bus to school? It took me 45 mins to do a 10 min journey this morning all because I have to go past a school. I would catch a bus but I have to carry tools. I was late for work and so I lost money. I think that some parents are dead selfish. and should loose there licences for making unessasary journeys. Greenpeace have been trying to stop this for years because of polution but they still keep up there selfish ways. I say let us blockade the schools and keep these planet destroyers out
Don't bother to correct my spelling, I am an honest but not very bright worker and i'm not going to use spell check

I suspect your only bothered about it cause it affects you directly would you blockade the school if it didnt affect you in any way i doubt it.but if im wrong and you genuinly are concerned about the amount of traffic on the roads then good luck.and yes children should walk to school too many lazy parents drive just round the corner to drop there brats off.

Look, I understand your anger and frustration, but, you have to understand that it's also hard for some parents.
I don't say that all of those who are doing this don't have another choice, but I know for being a single parent how hard it is.
I do that very rarely.
Now, some parents don't have somebody to look after their kids and do have to run and do their best to go to work in time, just like yourself and get their young kids to school.
So, unless employers become more understanding or make special arrangements for parents, then the problem won't get any better.
So, it's not just a question of parents or chilrdren being lazy.
Good luck.

Some schools are actively encouraging a walk to school policy. I don't know if this is an initiative to achieve a 'Healthy School' award, but it helps the environment and improves the health of the children. There is even in some areas a 'Walking Bus'! Designated adults collect childen in a certain area and walk them in a group to the school. I even know some county councils promote a "walk to school week" and take a 'how did you get to school' survey to see if the mesage is getting through. Finally, some parents I know drive part of the way, then park and make the children walk the rest! Things are changing! Maybe not fast enough for you!

I do see your point and this winds me up too, despite the fact the I have children, but then I live around the corner from the school to which they go. My biggest problem is the parents who drive their kids to school then park on the pavement so we end up having to walk in the road!
I think that schools should have drop off points inside the school grounds and more partens should take responsibility, walk when they can and even do what my local school has done, organise a walking bus where different parents help out each day!
Other drivers passing the school drive at high speeds (I suppose this is because they are running late) and I am so scared that someone is going to get hurt!
School times are a complete nightmare, for most of us. if everyone just thought about others and took the time to do whats right, to do their little bit, the problem would be so much smaller.
So I really think that you should have left a little earlier, if you knew you was passing a school (taking on your responsibility) but I also feel that all parents should take on their responsibility and walk when they can!

If you had to drop a 5yo at school at a specific time and then carry on to work, how would you achieve it? how do you know that the parents don't have to carry tools to work too? I can't believe that you're the only one with these constraints.

Try contacting the school. POLITELY. Better still, try setting off for work earlier, after all, you've only yourself to consider. Think how much better it would be for you and everyone else for you to avoid the stress and the traffic.

No, you aren't very bright, are you? Otherwise what I've said would already have occurred to you.

Like so many who have no children and therefore no clue of the juggling required between home and school, it's easier for you to moan. Grow up.

During the time my daughter has spent at our local school we have walked, but she's not going there anymore, so I'll have to drive her from now on, as the other school is too far (with very busy, nutter-filled main roads and NO crossing lady!).
One of the good things about the local school was that we could walk every day, but unfortunately the school is a nightmare in every other way.

Every day I see parents pull out from streets 100 yards from the school, and park outside the school gates, then drive back home. I don't understand that, because they aren't late, and they do it every day. Some of them even insist on driving right INTO the school playground, despite being told time and again they aren't allowed. Crazy. And many of them park up up to 45 minutes before then end of school time, even though they live within walking distance. They clearly are not in a rush (as they claim).

People who have posted answers on here (and others I know) think that there are loads of paedophiles about who are going to abduct children etc. It is still safe for children to walk to & from school (if they take adequate care with traffic and don't use alleyways), GLA is building loads of bike parking spaces at schools for children to use, and in London anyone under 16 can take the bus for free.

Please remember - a child is more likely to be abused by a family member or someone they know than by a stranger.

You are right i walk to school i live 4 miles away from it, sometimes i get the bus, i have a particular thing against the type of parent who drives a big 4by4 car to take 2 children to school when they live 20 mins walk away.
On the way to my school there is a big all girls school, and every morning me and my friends walk past it, there is where most of the traffic is because all the parents drive massive fuel guzzling machines to drop off one child maybe 2 at the school when they live 3 roads away from the school at most!! Those 3 roads are known to have those girls live on there because the big houses they live in are there, its horrifying and there is some sort of parent competition about who's car is best, and they get so stressed because they are late to work because of the traffic-i don't understand!

Obviously you cannot send really young children to school on their own on the bus or walking but what happened to car-pulling.
And as for all this talk about all the risks of it, from dangerous people, how much more of a nanny state do you want to live in?!?!?! if you are that concerned, walk your child to school or get on the bus with them.

There wasn't an option when I was a kid. You either walked or was bussed. The school should realize there is a traffic problem and take appropriate action. Kids are catered to far too much these days. However, I do understand that some kids need to be driven to school for the parent's piece of mind to ensure they actually get there. Staying there is another story. Appropriate actions by the school would ensure a more free flowing line of traffic that would cut down on traffic delays and emissions. Go to a school board meeting and address your concerns. Ask if a police officer or parent/safety patrol could be made available for better traffic flow. Good luck.

well some people worry about having their kids take a bus have you seen all the accidents about buses, or if you have them walk how many kids disappear every year. Do not put a mother or a father down because they want to keep their kids safe. That is their job is to keep their children safe from all predators then so be it. I am a parent of three wonderful kids and I will take them to school every morning and pick them up just because I know that they are safe. Get a bike instead of walking and one with a basket so that you can out you tools in it and if you don't want a bike then leave a little earlier every morning so you do not be late and lose money

In my case, we only live a few blocks from the school, so I either walk my daughter (she's 7) or we ride bikes. On bad weather days, I drive her to school. We both enjoy the walking and biking, but I absolutely can not let her walk or ride her bike alone, because we have a convicted child molester living only a couple of blocks away. If it means protecting her and keeping her alive and unharmed, I would drive her 10 feet. Her safety is the most important thing.
