Local nonprofits who are helping families make ends meet.

There is no excuse for families who are working full time at jobs that don't pay enough to pay the bills. Not in my backyard.

No one, I mean NO one should EVER have to decide whether to pay the rent, or buy medicine. Nor should they have to choose which utility to pay. Or decide between a utility or food.

Even more basic than that, no mother should ever have to buy one gallon of whole milk and dilute it with water to stretch it into two gallons for her family.

Even MORE basic: No one should ever have to rip paper towels in half and save them. Why would they do this? Because they're so afraid that if they run out of toilet paper, they won't have money to buy more.

Such basic human rights. And it happens in every community. Not just in "those neighborhoods." I work in non-profit, and I see families in need in the inner city, and in the decidedly more middle to upper-middle class suburbs.

Again, I say, not in my backyard. While these families might not be my next-door neighbors, this is my community, and I have a responsibility to care for my community.

Humanitarian issues. I'm passionate about doing something about the genocide in Darfur & the arrest of the monks peacefully protesting in Myanmar, but still trying to figure out how to really make a difference.
