I know some ppl that won't get a male dog ever. they claim they just feel more connected to females. while others say the same of male dogs.

i myself have always gravitated towards male dogs..though i have had dogs of both sexes; my closest bonds have been w/male dogs.

some would point out that males are more protective or loyal. some would point out that females are more nurturing or calm.
which sex of dog do you prefer and why?

i certainly would not say one is more protective, loyal or nurturing between the sexes...
In Ibizan Hounds the male is a clown..he keeps a very puppy like personality for a much longer period..the females tend to act like adults at about 1-2 years old..sometimes the males never do ... I think in Ibizans I prefer the boys.they make you laugh nonstop
in my GSD's again I like my boy better.. our girl is a little more active..and dingy.. our male is really cool and fun and listens regardless...
I would not say any one is more loyal than the next..they have their favorite people and show more attention to one more than the other.

Boys are fun!! I have found this to be true most of the time..but each dog is different

I have a male and a female dog. Our male dog is my shadow, the female dog is my husband's. I've only ever had male dogs before the female pug we just got - so it's hard for me to connect with her a little bit. My husband has had female dogs in the past, so I think he has a special connection with her.

They are both sweet, loving, and loyal, but the female has *much* more energy than the male, even though they are about the same age. I'm not sure if that's typical, though.

I think in the long run, I would always gravitate towards male dogs.

After having my female, I can't imagine having a male. But I do think that many of her characteristics that I love might be normally more associated with a male -- high drive, very loyal, very bonded (follows me everywhere). Those are some things that people normally associate with having a male dog, thinking females con sometimes be more aloof and independent. Honestly though, I think it really depends on the dog. There might be certain trends in behavior among genders, but it all really boils down to the individual dog.

Any toy dogs that I get in the future will probably be male. I prefer males of toy breeds because they're generally more eager to please. They also tend to bond more with women than female toy dogs do. My Papillon, Louie is a boy and we have an excellent relationship.

I have a female Siberian Husky. I don't think the differences between males and females are as significant in the larger breeds. Sydney is nurturing- if I'm upset, she'll drop everything (which is hard for her since she's all over the place!) and sit with me to make me happy again. She gives me her paw, licks my face and will cuddle up with me. However, the rest of the time, she's more self involved. I don't have any preference for gender of larger breeds so gender won't play a role in deciding what dog I get next.

I prefer females, but not so much because I can connect better. With the breed rescue I am involved with, the males are notorious markers, neutered or not. Although I foster males, and have been lucky with the guys I have had, many of my co-volunteers have been forced to have their dogs wear belly bands when in the house to save their furniture.
The dogs I own are all girls, although my very first dog was a male.
I would probably adopt a male if the right guy came along, and I have a foster guy right now who may fit the bill and become my next foster failure....

I prefer females but I have both actually 3 females and 1 male. The reason I prefer a female dog is that it seems like a male dog will pee on anything and a female will not. The male dog is house broken but just insist on peeing on the curtain. But this is just my experience.

I didn't really have a preference, but my husband was pro-male dog so that's what we ended up bringing home - a male black lab. And now, I just want to stick with male dogs. I don't know why really lol I guess it's just because our boy is so good.
If you were to ask my hubby, he thinks girl dogs are 'witchy' (well he used a different term!). I don't know, I've never owned a girl dog. I'll be interested in the answers you get - good question.

I tend to prefer dogs for their personality rather than gender. I have a very sweet, people friendly Border Collie named Maizee.

Typically, when people make references to having a favorite gender in any animal, they apply stereotypes of society to the pet. People will describe their males as "tough and aggressive" when in reality you are more likely to be ripped apart by a female protecting her babies.

Gender shouldn't be an important issue in dogs. If you animal is spayed or neutered, there is hardly any difference between a male and a female. You will have a less sex-crazy male and female who doesn't go into heat thirty minutes before your dinner guests arrive.

My aunt always says that a male dog takes to a female and a female dog takes to a male. This is true most of the time, although there are aceptions....

I have always prefered the males in my breed. I just like their look and temperment I have found them to more loving and protective to me than the females. Also a much higher drive for most jobs I give them.
I have 3 males here with me now! lol
