My dachshund gave birth friday night to 4 pups. the father is boxer (how this happened i have no idea) I didnt think it was possible. But now she is bleeding alot and not wanting to eat at all. I am worried and going to take her to the vet. But I dont know if this is normal like after a woman giving birth or what???? she still feeds the pups and the pups are healthy. If anyone knows anything please let me know... Thanks

Ok, we went to Vet as soon as they opened, he said that she just needed some calcium so he gave her shot of that and some antibiotics.. he said she should be feeling better by morning in the mean while we have to feed the pups ourselves. So we came home and she started doing worse so we rushed her back and now is hospitalized, I dont know whats next except for waiting for the Vet to call me.... She is like family to us and I was crying when we had to leave her, but I pray that she is going to be fine....Thanks for all the answers and if there is anymore I dont mind that either...especially if you have gone thru this b4. I will keep everyone posted on what happens and I will put pics online so everyone can see Boxer Dachshund mix, They are Cute!!

Hello everyone, and thanks again for answering my question, I am sorry to say that she didnt make it, later that evening the Vet called me and she had passed away. She was the best dog anyone could have asked for and I am still crying over this. The vet did a autopsy and found out that one of the sacs grown to her uterus and when she gave birth it tore and she wouldnt have been able to have been saved. He said it wasnt the breed it was just bad luck.... If anyone wants to see the pups pictures just contact me if ur able to and I will send a pic of them, they are healthy and round. We miss her so much , she has been with us for many years, I KNOW from now on all my dogs get fixed and I should have done it before she got pregnant I guess i shouldnt doubt nature, I just didnt think it was possible.... Thanks Again Everyone........

FRESH BLOOD OF ANY KIND of ANY amount..4 days later IS NOT normal..
Normal locha (dicharge) is tan somwhat clear, somtimes a small amount of green without any odor..NOT fresh blood..
The fact her appetited is down (BIG SIGN),, with the blood is a indication of a problem.. What is her temp?.. should be taking it twice or at least once a day..the status of the dad actually does not have to much to do with it,, other than possible infection diease he could have passed on to your girl in the breeding process..
There are several possible contiditons I can think of off the top of my head..some are treatable,, some are LIFE treatining to her and her pups.. She may be fine.. but honesly please go to the vet get her examined.. it is not approperate to give you ANY other advise or suggestions,,no will I give you a lecture or make judgements.. because the primary issue is your dog needs Vet care.. and please GO!!!

Wow, a Boxer getting a Dachshund pregnant, and her actually surviving the delivery and the puppies actually making it is a miracle, but if she's got excessive bleeding, and not wanting to eat, it's definitely, not normal. After giving birth, the mom usually has a much bigger appetite, and eats alot more than usual, so she can get the proper nutrients she needs to nurse those puppies. Being that the Boxer is so much larger than she is and she had to deliver such large puppies, her insides are probably a mess. She could possibly be bleeding internally as well as externally, and needs professional help now. It's really necessary for you to take her and the puppies to the vet immediately and have them all checked out. Don't put it off PLEASE!!! It could be life threatening! PLEASE do both of your dogs a favor when this is all over, and have them both fixed. Trust me, they will be happier and healthier in the long run!!! This situation, is the perfect example of what could happen, if an inexperienced individual breeds their dogs, and knows nothing about it. Please leave the breeding to the professionals!

No it's not normal for her to be bleeding heavily at all after 4 days. Please get her into your vet ASAP! Bring the pups too. Just keep them warm during travel time. This way your vet can check everyone out.
Good luck!

Please take her to your vets for a checkup just to be on the safe side especially as the father is SO much bigger than the mother (wow wonder what the pups will look like when grown)
Please let us know how you get on at the vets and how mum and pup are doing.
You are very very luck that your dachshund managed to deliver such large pups I am relieved to hear they are healthy but PLEASE PLEASE don't delay taking her to the vets

yes it is normal to bleed after birthing but not a lot of blood, more like when a human has a baby or her period but you should bring her to a vet for a shot of oxytocin and a check on her and the pups. Her not eating is not good, when my chi I rescued had her pups she ate between number 2 and 3 and then again when #4 (stillborn) was born.

If she's still bleeding 4 days later you need to have her into the vet. Especially if she isn't eating. She isn't getting enough nutrients to sustain herself let alone a litter of pups.

well fortunately nature usually fits the babies to the mama when they are born... but with the size difference only so much can be done..her little uterus is probably in shambles. Take her to the vet and hopefully they can stop the bleeding...some is normal..alot is not!
good luck to mama and babies

There is always bleeding after birth..but not an excessive amount. It's like a period for us.......it's enough to change the puppy bedding a couple times a day,if that eases your mind any. But,a check up is always in order after birth.
