I cannot stop my computer from dialing an internet connection on its own. I will be away from the computer, or, doing something in a program, and the "dialing/connecting" pop-up comes up and I hear my modem dialing. It is very frustrating . How can I control this or stop it?

Give this a try. If you using IE go to tools at the top, Next go to internet options. Next select the connections tab. then change the setting to NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION. This will keep your computer from automatically dialing.

Change your settings. Go to start, then control panel, then network connections, look under connections (I don't have it anymore so I'm using my memory, but it should be under one of those tabs,) uncheck always dial or dial even when not in use or something like that. Or call your Internet carrier, they can tell you quickly what to do. It's just something that is checked wrong in the settings.

WOW, You have a virus. You need to unplug your phone cable from your machine NOW. then go to the store, buy an antivirus program and update it online so you will have to connect the phone cable again. That dialer could be calling anywhere in the world. This is an old school form of a virus since not to many people use dial up anymore but they it can be costly.

You have a spyware infection (a dialer)

You should (with the phone disconnected) run the following FREE software.
Ad-Aware
Spy-Bot
Windows Defender

Make sure that you have not been charged for premium rate calls when your computer has been self-dialing!

something on your pc is trying to get onto the internet, most likely a program.

Maybe you have msn or yahoo messenger open?
Kazaa or limewire?
Maybe your anti-virus is searching for updates?
Maybe you have a virus/trojan on your pc?

think of all programs you use that require internet access and see how the process of elimination goes.
