yeah, i know he broke us away from the catholic church, but he tried to convert everyone to what he believed. when the Jews wouldn't convert he said (exact words you can look it up yourself) "put them all in their synagogues and burn them". wow what a great guy, huh? i'm a Christian, but every time i hear someone mention Martin Luther, I cringe. but all others are like "look what he did for the church", screw the church, he hated people because they didn't believe like him. the more i think about it, the more i don't want to be like him. how come everybody thinks he's so wonderful?

Martin Luther did do many great things.
He also was prejudiced due to the rapid hate during the history of this time. If you read up on the Lutheran church denomination, you'll learn they disagree with his obvious hatred of Jews. Do you think he is worshipped as a hater of the Jews? Do you think Roman Catholic Rule over many nations in a good thing? Learn before you spout.

First, for those of you who are unaware: the question is about Martin Luther, NOT Martin Luther King. Second, what could be considered "great" about Martin Luther is that he stopped the Catholic Church from "saving souls" by selling ignorant people papers that stated they were going to heaven. The Church also had people believing that the ONLY way to heaven was THEIR way and that a person could not talk to God directly, but only through a priest. That's hogwash and he knew it. If he hated Jews I guess he got his just dessert eventually.

Good question. I respect Martin Luther. Forget about his words, he was a human being not a god . But if he really did burn those Jews, he would be wrong. But we can't deny that he rescued the church from darkness, unknowledge , fear. He brought it to the true Christianity which was only the Bible, away from the church authorities. That wt i respect in him.

Good Luck!!

A Geman before his times? Would Martin Luther think differently today?

I think you hit the nail on the head in more ways than one:

While Martin Luther is to be commended for his part in bringing about the Reformation and sowing the seeds of Protestantism, he was not perfect! He had a lot to learn.

Point: No person should be "immortalized" or "worshiped" or made to look "infallible". To err is human......for every person born of two parents.

Point: You shouldn't strive to be like Martin Luther or any other human being. Strive to be like Jesus Christ. Take your eyes off of people and put them on God.

The reason some Christians admire Martin Luthur is because he stood up for what he thought was right. A warrant was put out for his arrest as a consequence. Even when he faced a trial to defend himself, he would not give way. Yes, he made mistakes in judgment. Some of his statements that shock us were mild for his time though. His important contribution was the doctrine of salvation through faith .

There's no way anyone could think Martin Luther was a "great guy." He was an adulteror and murderer of theologians he disagreed with. He split the Christian church into sects, which true to it's form, continues in Protestant sects to this day. (How many different "denominations" do Protestants have today?) However, is what he did good? Yes. It broke the chokehold Christianity had on Europe (and ultimately America) so that we can now choose from a plethera of religious or nonreligious beliefs.

If Luther really said those things, then he was very wrong on that. But he was very right that salvation is only by faith alone.

And catholics are not saved and are not Christians. Catholicism teaches a false gospel of works that leads to eternal hell (Galatians 1).

Best to avoid Lutheranism (because of some errors) and catholicism (because it leads to eternal hell), and simply believe the Bible.

I have never heard the quotes you give before. However he did many things to stop cultural prejudice in the US. He is seen as a good man by Christians and non-Christians. However anti-Semitism is wrong as the Jews are God's chosen people according to the Bible. So for him to have said that was deeply wrong and shameful.

Is it coincidence that the movements initiated by those "heroes" named after him ended up being just as bigoted and morally skewed?
