There are hi-fi nutters who spend as much on cables as they do on their equipment but as New Scientist pointed out nobody has shown how these magic wires perform their miracles.
As to the HDMI cable, it is carrying a purely digital signal which means either a 0 or a 1 or if you prefer an off and on signal.
There is no such thing as a high quality 0 or 1 so, ipso facto, the cheapest is the best.

Some people can see the difference.

Main thing is that you should avoid the non-HDTV connections which are the composite video and left/right audio (yellow, white and red).

Hard to tell component (red, green, blue) with audio left and right (white and red) from HDMI for most people. But I guess some can tell. I personally do not have a HDTV set in the home yet so I will have to wait to "weigh in" with my thoughts when I have the money. But you will hear people say they like one or the other the same you will hear them say the love Plasma versus LCD. If we all wanted the same products there would be fewer choices.

I would tend to like component wiring due to the lower cost for it initially and the lower cost to replace it when it breaks.

It makes a huge difference to the vendor and manufacturer, because they get more of your money. There's a huge markup on cables; you'll find some of the same cables on eBay sold for a fraction of the price.

You... you have less money, and a pretty shiny cable. The digital bits won't notice any difference, though.

It was a waist of 30.00 for me. I saw no difference between the hdmim cable and the composite video setup I had. Of course I'm old and have crappy eyes so take this for what it's worth.
