There isnt much that John Howard or indeed the Australian Govt can do for the Bali 9.

They were caught red-handed and convicted under the laws of Indonesia.

Australia will undoubtedly appeal for clemency...but aside from that, nothing else can be done.

These kids were stupid, thought they would get away with it, have been caught...and are only now coming to terms with the severity of their plight.

Stupid is as stupid does...

Cheers :)

Indonesia is a sovereign nation with their own laws and justice system. John Howard does not control what they do, and nor can any other prime minister or president of any other country.

The Australian Dept of Foreign Affairs does attempt to use diplomatic channels to get the best outcome it can for Australian citizens on trial on other countries. In particular, it is working to establish prisoner exchanges so that Australians imprisoned overseas can be transferred to Australian prisons. Australia does not have the death penalty and will always try to persuade foreign countries not to execute its citizens. Generally diplomatic discussions aren't reported until they are concluded, because it can put the negotiations at risk.

The crimes of the Bali 9 would be seen as very serious offences in Australia too, but the difference is that we don't have the death penalty.

I am far from being John Howards greatest fan but what he has done is allow a country to enforce its own laws like we do when we catch the Indonesian fisherman poaching in our waters.
We can't have it both ways when Australians go overseas we need to abide by theirs laws or suffer the consequences.

What do you expect the Australian Government to do?
The Bali 9 were caught red handed. They are guilty.
The Indonesians have their laws and penalties.
Sadly, there is nothing that can or should be done.

Getting John Howard to do anything that isn't self serving or for the rich, good luck.

The truth is, Howard can't help them due to their stupidity.

We the voters will help Howard out of office on November 24.
