to bear2zealand: i hope you dont have any animals since you think that soaking a dog in used motor oil will do the trick, you moron...you can kill a dog like that, and you pass judgement on me...sheesh! i took my dog to the vet, and the stuff they gave me isnt working, so i thought i'd try asking on here what other people have tried, just to get some ideas as to what really works instead of putting my dog thru some kind of experiment, which will just stress her out more...my dog is well taken care of, thank you very much, her mange just happens to be hereditary which is what i meant by saying "it might be demodex" ... i am not relying on opinions like yours though, thank god!

Well, the treatement for Demodex is Diffrent than the treatment for Sarcoptic mange.. So a definitive Diagnosis is needed, Skin scrape, exam by a vet..also there are several other skin infections that can also mimic mange or could be a secondary infection that will also need to be treated.. in order to provide your dog relief..
Demodex is a parasite ALL dogs have, when a dog gets a demodex outbreak it is due to the dogs immune system not keeping the parasite under control, very common in puppies,, sick or stressed dogs(resuce) less so in older dogs
There are 2 forms, local, and generlized.. it is considered local form if there are less then 5 spots, more spots or wide spread is generlized.. Treatment includes good nutrition, sometimes a use of medications (NOT MOTOR OIL!!!) with local form of demodex.. OFTEN no treatment is used esp if the dog has the potential as a breeding dog,, Generlized demodex is inherited and dogs should not be used for breeding..So if this dog was purchased as a breeding dog.. Guess what,, go to the vet get a definitive Diagnosis,, to see if it is generlized form.. and GO BACK to the breeder with it,, because your dogs breeding DAYS are OVER!!!! this of couse assumes the breeder was reputable, and also your contract does have a clause in it that your dog would be free of genetic defects..you would hope so with Demodex being a very common problem in pit bulls
ok more info...
Medications are used..to kill the parasites till the immune system has a chance to keep the parasites managable.. Mita ban dips, need to be repeated every 10-14 days till 2 negitive skin scrapings, oral daily medications are sometimes used.. sometimes months of treatment is needed..additional treatment of secondary skin infections(antibiotics) are often used at the same time..on dip will not do it.. sorry..
FMI demodex..

Sarcoptic mange is treated either with lyme sulfer dips, injectible medications, or now the use of the topicical monthly prodect revolution.. this parasite is infectious to humans so needs to be treated properly..

The end result is a actuall diagnosis is needed... the treatments for each are completly diffrent,,, often with more severe forms of demodex( common in pit bulls) there is no complete cure.. one dip one treatment is not going to work.. and with demodex often there is not a treatment per say,, or even treatment recommended..

Hope this helps
Amanda

Have you taken him to the vet? If it *might* be demodectic mange, then it also might *not* be demodectic mange. In that case, Mitaban dips are going to do nothing. There are other types of mange and skin mites. And it could even be a fungal infection, or another skin problem. They are present with very similar symptoms, hair loss and skin irritation. Make an appointment to see a veterinarian so they can test his skin for all the different mites, and so they can test for ringworm (a fungal infection). Then go from there. Once you know for sure what kind of skin condition your dog has, you will be able to treat it. Good Luck!

**If you know For Sure that he has Demodex, Mitaban dips are the best treatment. It take several weeks to get demodex under control. The number of treatments is related to how bad this skin is. It is best to have the dip done by the veterinary staff. They know what they are doing. If it gets done incorrectly, you will just be dipping him forever, and see no results.

This does not make any sense to me. If might be demodex? You used mitoban? Why don't you have your vet do a skin scraping to tell you exactly what you are dealing with and treat it appropriately. You can ask your vet about his thoughts of using Taktic dip. You need to get a definate diagnosis from your vet, you need to get skin scrapings done on your dog. You say that the dog has mange, but then you say it might be demodex, what has your vet said or have you even taken the dog to the vet? What if your dog has something else like m. gypsium or m.canis (ringworm). Only a skin scraping done at the vets can tell you the organism that your dog has.

Maybe you can try to used motor oil trick as well! My god, poor dog does not need an owner like you.

Buy a dip for it at the nearest feed store. You may have to go out of town if you live inthe city. The pet store items and the grocery store and department store ones don't work. Even after one does work, the scabs, itching and scratching will linger for a few days. You probably need to go to the vet at this point. People can catch mange, but when we get it, it's called scabies. You'll have to wash or treat all of the bedding and furniture and carpeting or the dog and you will get reinfected. I like Camicide in the yellow can, but it's hard to find.

Instead of guessing what kind of mange your dog has, you really need to take the animal to a vet and have a skin scraping done. Unchecked mange can become very painful for an animal, and will eventually kill. There is no home remedy to fix this. Go to the vet.

Bathe the pup with baby shampoo. Any fleas that don't come off, pick them off by hand and kill them. Most importantly, get rid of the fleas on the mother and in the dogs' living/sleeping area so more fleas don't keep jumping on the puppy. You can use Revolution on lactating females. It works great and it is applied topically, not taken internally.

This dip is the best available in my book.BUT,it MUST be repeated a few times to ensure they are under control. My chihuahua only needed this 1 round of dipping, although it is known to come back.I also bred her sucessfully and NO puppies were infected,as it IS known to be passed from a mother dog.

Has your vet confirmed that this is actually mange? If so, he is probably a better source for treatment.
