I don't know about viet minh. But the viet cong are those north communist.

Vietcong

Name for the North-Vietnamese comm army which fought against South Vietnam.
After US troops left Southeast Asia in the 60's the comms won the Vietnam War. Laos and Camboja also fell and the three became under communist regime in the 60's.

Vietminh

The Việt Minh pronunciation (help·info) (abbreviated from Việt Nam Ðộc Lập Ðồng Minh Hội, English "League for the Independence of Vietnam") was a communist revolutionary national liberation movement formed by Hồ Chí Minh in 1941 to seek independence for Vietnam from France as well as to oppose the Japanese occupation.

That is what the called themselves..

The Viet-Cong was the name given to the same group by the South Vietnamese President of the time (with a little help from the CIA) in that it sounded a bit more like 'Viet Communists' - And would help the American people engage with the war effort...

The Viet-Minh was the name given to the guerrilla fighters who fought against the French when they occupied the country.

The Viet-Cong were the pro-communist irregular forces based in the South of Vietnam, fighting against the South-Vietnamese Government and the USA Forces

Communists called themselves Vietminh when France occupied the country, and they fought the French.
Communists called themselves Vietcong and fought the US military when it occupied Vietnam.

I'm not familiar with the Viet minh; the Viet Cong were individuals who fought for North Viet Nam as guerrilla fighters.
