I know I have had this one a few times and I find it very offensive.

You could be looking for something and finding it very difficult, you know that you have tried your best to locate the object and you fail.
You ask for assistance and he response is...

"Open your eyes and then you may find it" or "Have you actually tried looking?"
and if they find it, they will tell me...
"Are you blind?! It has been here all the time".

Why do you think people respond this way?

Hi Saretooth,

It is extremely rude. Don't people realize that you would not be asking for assistance to find something you misplaced, or need IF YOU DID NOT attempt to find it yourself in the first place..

To those that reply with such a response, are selfish, inconsiderate individuals.

When they say "are you blind? it has been here all the time". You may reply, " I guess I have a blind spot with my a large nose, it just got in the way". Or you can choose to ignore it altogether.

They act like ******* because they know they should be doing the job themselves but they have managed to push it onto an intern or an assistant or secretary or someone who won't get the full credit when credit is due. Their reputation is riding on your ability to find something, so if you can't, they call you blind. It is actually they who are blind. They have lost sight of what their job actually entails and they have forgotten not to step on people on their way up the ladder. Don't worry, you can at least rest assured that this ****** who called you blind will go down. Be glad he's not taking you with him.

Mostly this is just one of those things people say and is not meant (usually) to hurt the person's feelings, HOWEVER, to answer your question, no, I don't think it is right to call people names ever.

It is like if someone was blind and couldn't find their way no one would say, "God, I wish you weren't blind, other wise you would have seen that." Instead, people want to help. This is the way it should be all the time. Not just when someone really has a handicap.

I think it could be wrong, especially if you call someone blind and mean it as an insult! blind people are people too. It was just something that happened to them and that should never be made fun of.. just like any other disadvantages people have.

Seems rude. Good question though. It could go both ways depending on the circumstances - light hearted joking is one thing, but discrimination or verbal abuse is definitely another.

It really depends on the situation. Maybe not "blind", more like forgetful. You have to look at it metaphorically or like a normal expression. I mean sometimes you're looking for something that's already obvious but you're just too preoccupied or in a hurry to notice. My vote is that people should just direct what's lost, period. A little good never hurts once in a while but it really depends. Sometimes you just can't help but comment when it's must too seldom ^^.)

I thought I left my sunglasses on the bus, and to my dismay it was round the corner before I could retrieve them. Can you imagine how I felt when they were on my head?!

It is rude to call people blind, I have had customers asking where something is, and it's right in front of them! I just point it out to them, and they normally laugh at themselves.

There's nothing wrong with calling somebody blind because they are overlooking something. It's not like you're making fun of them because they are actually blind.

Lighten up some.

Wait for the time when he makes a mistake or can't find things too and call him "blind"....see how he feels.

I consider the source and chalk it up to their insensitivity or lack of intelligence. Then I move on.
