First, the people that said in martinis either have a very unique taste or they meant "dry vermouth". Sweet vermouth is most widely used in a manhatten.
Second, (if you mean straight sweet vermouth) yes... I worked at a member-only country club and we had ONE lady (out of several hundred) that would order sweet vermouth. I think it is disguisting alone, but she loved it. I've never seen anyone order dry vermouth as it is.

Yes, it is really good when it is misted over a gin martini - it adds lots of flavor.
It is also in my favorite cocktail, the Manhattan (whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters).
