You have two choices when driving to Albany

a) direct route

b) scenic route

if you take a) you will head from Perth CBD to the citys SE suburbs, ie Armadale/Gosnells and then jump on the Albany Highway. From Gosnells to Albany is sealed the whole way, with many overtaking lanes and clear visibility. Wtih light traffic and no stops it can take only 3.5-4 hours from Gosnells to Albany.

The scenic route is going down the tradition "down south" route, via Bunbury, Busselton etc etc. If you have time, and are tourists this is the way to go. But with all the stops at wineries, jetties, galleries and whatever else you could find it takes the entire day to reach Albany. That route even without stops would probably take over 6 hours to complete.

The only time I would say its not safe is in mid-December when the school leavers are rioting down south, drink driving, etc etc. Try to avoid long weekends/public hjolidays/school holidays if possible and then there's no problems.

Do observe the speed limit, ensure your whole family are wearing seatbelts, and don't drive tired or drink and drive.

Take extra precaution if driving at night and you are unfamiliar with driving in Australian country at night time. There are many more precautions you should take then.

The occasional winery. Some spectacular scenery.

Apart from that, no real danger. Sealed roads all the way.
