As I read through some of the answers given I realize that most people do not understand the issue with Eve eating from the forbidden tree. It's not about eating anything. It's going against the Word of God. At that that time there was only one real forbidden thing and "man" could not even resist that.
Take a good look at Genesis 3. First came obstinance, then lieing, then deception, then death. And if you look real close Eve was not really held accountable for this. Adam was! For he was the one that God gave the command to. Adam was put "over" Eve and he (Adam) failed to protect her and they were put out of the Garden. THey were cast out from God's presence and we are here today pretty much fending for ourselves.
Good question. Pose the question a better way - What if Adam had stood his ground and not eaten also? (See Gen 3:17)

God made a perfect man and woman . no sin and in perfect fellowship with God. He also made the Angels perfect They had every thing they would need or want .There could be no other as perfect a place for man to be. Yet they disobeyed God and were found in sin the free wil lof men and angels. The teaching from God to us in this is that anything no matter how perfect it is it can not be sinnless out side from God becouse we are not God. He is holyness He is purity He is Light the only One that is truely perfect. To enlighten us to our need of His holyness He has writen us examples like this . When you consider the Angels . God created them the Angels perfect also and Satan was one of these created Angels. They all were sinnless perfect as they could be for Angels and Man) . But both of the groups seemed not to have the strenghth to stop from sinning. Even though they were in a perfect enviorment. Satan even more so he was in the presance of God continuely and quite possible saw the creation of the universe and of man. it seems also that the Angles understand the differance of good and evil they proclaim Gods holyness and understand that God has no place for wickedness. So Satan was more accountible to God than Adam but both fell . Point being that no mater how much God does to give His creation a perfect life it seem they will always fall to sin . What this show us is that no other except God is truely perfect and if we want that type of perfection we need God to give us his perfection,,His Holyness. We ( humans) can not do it ourselfs the strenghth is not in us and we are in a sadder state than The Angels or Adam and Eve they were perfect in the start and they could not stay holy now here we are already in sin ,,, if the perfect Adam and Eve and part of the Angles fell how much more do we need God to make us perfect. God is the only Holy being and we need to be like Him. In His time He has said He will no longer talerate sin in His presance. . That is why you see events recorded for us of past events of man kind to teach us so we will understand Him and what our need is .

If you think thats a kicker try this on for size...If Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree but then realizing the phenominal screw up had turned to seek God rather than try to hide in shame so they could continue in their sin in secret only to be found out and then play the blame game, and had instead confessed their sin and repented of it, unlike Eve who blamed the Serpant (the devil made me do it) or Adam who blamed Eve and even alluded to God being responsible as well..."this woman YOU made me..." then God would have forgiven them and simply restored them back to the original innosence. However, they didn't repent...cuz they didn't hate the sin. We all sin...that wasn't what caused the fall of man..and actually we have never fallen from Grace...grace has always been there why else would God have allowed Adam and Eve to live and continue. As it was, He took the life and shed the blood of what would have had to have been a clean animal, pure (perhaps a lamb) and made a covering for their nakedness....that's how it all started. So it was in the beginning so it will be in the end...Jesus is our lamb now..and the way to Him is to see ourselves as sinners, recognize how vile it is the things we do and how vile it makes us. Hate that sin the way God does and He can't hate the sinner, but have compassion. Cuz the second you don't want to do that thing is the very same second that you are compelled the most to do it...this is the legacy that we are left with and that is why Christ came to earth for us. For you. However, if Eve had gone into the garden alone and been tempted and withstood that temptation...as Christ did later on...then all would have been as it was...as it will be on the new earth. She could have shunned the words of the Satan and turned to flee looking for her mate and her God and there would have been mass celebration in that Garden and someone...serpantish would have had to answer right away. We would have remained young innosent children, I believe each one of us created in turn, day by day, and God would have been our Father, God would have been our brother and the Holy Spirit our Mother in the Holy Family. Instead He created that institution with us and even that has been messed up by our stupidity. Yet, Jesus has restored it all. All things are made new...Love in Christ, ~J~

When Adam and Eve ate from the tree, sin entered into the picture. If they had not eaten from this tree, there would be no sin and God would not have had to send Jesus to save us from our sin. We would already be living in paradise.

It's allegorical. There was no literal Eve to eat from the 'forbidden tree'.

If Eve and Adam obeyed God and didn't eat from the forbidden tree, there will probably not be sin in this world.

It's just an analogy in a story to come up for a reason why there is hardship in the world, and how Mankind lost their innocence. Supposedly, if our ancient relatives had listened to god we would still be walking around innocent and buck naked. I guess they would have figured out how to have offspring.
