You know when you've been insulted with a smile? You know you've been insulted, they know you've been insulted but it's been done in such a way that if you pull them up on it they can just deny it outright and say they didn't mean it like that which then just makes you look paranoid and childish.

Honey, Just speak with your eyes and not your face....
I know what you mean - we've all been there.

I am having an almost identical problem right now at work. The way my coworker acts to me (in a similar manner as the person you are referring to), just really turns my stomach in knots and makes me feel uncomfortable. You know they will deny it if you call them on it, so there's not a whole lot that can be done. The best advice so far on my previous question of a similar matter is to either just remind yourself that it is they are who are being the jerks, and not you, and you should just look on them with pity.

It's so hard, there's no real answer that you want to hear, I know. But good luck!

It happened to me recently and without giving it a thought, I responded with a “you are such a nice person". The look on my face said all I really wanted to say. I know that was not the response expected and she sort of avoids me now.

The way to handle this is at the time if you can think of a quick witted reply. But just give them one of them fake smiles & move away, with people like that you have to realise it's them with the problem & they are only trying to bring you down as they feel bad about themselves!. I use to let these things bother me but now I just think by them being nasty it's cause they're haters so they're really giving you loades of compliments. I wouldn't socialise with people like that though there trying to break you.

As regards to the thumbs down to the really good answers - is this the bullying hour?!

Just 'smile' back and come back with a brilliant one-liner. People watching are not stupid, they will pick up on her antics, don't worry.

If you know you are smarter, make mental note, and waylay them when they least expect it. Catch them off balance, and then verbally get in your digs.

If they are smarter than you, if you try this, they will rip you to shreds. Your best bet then is to ignore them.

Either way, you should flip them off with both hands

In respose to thumbs down: Any response that does not include taking action gets a thumbs down from me. A 'good answer' (as if any one of your opinions are tantamount to what a good answer is, over any of the rest of ours) will include taking action. I stand up to bullies. I encourage you to do the same. If not for you, at least think about the next person she will be able to do this to. And another thing to consider - If she is that shitty in public, how do you think she is when it is just her and her friends? Sure. Just ignore it.

just smile and walk away , to take it on the chin makes you the bigger person and the other person petty for trying to make you look small in front of others, but if you ignore it with grace and style they will look the fools not you . to retaliate is what they want you to do so why give them the pleasure?

I'd go in close but quietly with a 'f--k you too'.Why be worried about looking petty or childish?

Just look at her and smile big and say "Well, thank you, that's so nice of you to say, I really appreciate you."

Sort like the old saying: Kill em with kindness.

She'll have egg on her face then.

I'd turn to whoever else was there, smile, and say 'Isn't that just like Charlie (whoever), always looking out for me?'

or simply, 'This is my dear friend Charlie'.

Takes the fun out of it for louts that do that -- kind of making fun of them too.

Maybe just kinda raise your eyebrows and and say "thanks" in a mildly sarcastic kind of way. Then go about your business as if it never even happened. If you can, pointedly ingnore that person. Act like what they said had NO bearing on your life; cause it doesn't. :)
