He showed no signs until tonight when he started panting. Dr. said it might be cancer but could be other things too, and they're doing surgery in 2 hours. I need to hear from anyone who's awake and reading because I'm a total wreck. This cat is like my child and I'm trying not to think it's the worst thing.Has anyone had this happen and have their cat not have cancer? Until today my cat was healthy, always kept indoors, shots up to date, and regular vet visits.

Thank you so much for posting, you're all angels.
My cat's name is Toffee, and they need to stabilize him before surgery, that's why the wait. His gum pale indicating in his case, anemia. The surgery is exploratory, we'll hear back at 4:30 a.m. what they find. Thank you so much for your prayers!

My cat had to have a transfusion before the surgery due to blood loss, and another after surgery. He had his spleen removed, it had a mass on it. (JeN-thank you for explaining!) Biopsied pinpoint nodules from his pancreas, liver was a little light in color so biopsied it, said it could be from loss of blood. Will get biopsy reports back in a few days. Vet said it definitely could have been worse but she's concerned there could be some spread of cancer so have to wait on the biopsies. Also blood sugar was high so he has to be tested for diabetes. Thank you all for your prayers, including little Ethell's! This cat is a brat at times, demanding but so full of love that I'm the lucky one here.

I'm sure by now the surgery has been done, but I figured I'd add my two cents anyway. The anemia is caused by losing blood from the spleen (obviously) and placing the patient on IV fluids is required to stabilize the blood pressure so that it can be put under anesthesia and operated on.
Splenic tumors are very common in dogs and cats, and are usually classified as hemangiosarcomas (cancer of the blood vessels). When the spleen ruptures from the cancer for whatever reason, the symptoms are seen as sudden onset of fluid in the abdomen, distress (panting), anemia, and lethargy, which is what you saw.
Surgery can be curative if the cancer has not yet metastasized, and if the patient has the strength to recover. Good luck, I hope your cat comes out alright.

I would go back to the doctor, and ask him or her to run some tests, for other diseases or conditions that may have caused your spleen to enlarge in the first place. You may have a poor protein intake, right now, so load up a little more on protein rich foods, as a lack of protein in the diet can cause an enlarged belly region. There are other conditions that cause fluid build up in the belly, so its very important that you go to the doctor and ask for a full work up, maybe an MRI, even. Here are some conditions that can cause a spleen to enlarge, and I dont know if you have a regular physician or just go to walk in clinics, or what, but its better off for your health to just get that stuff ruled out, just in case. Good luck to you and I hope you get better soon!!! =)

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
No, I have not had cats with an enlarged spleen or cancer. I have had many other illnesses, though.
I will pray for you and kitty that whatever the problem, it has been found early enough for a total and speedy recovery. Please post kitty's name.
Purrs and prayers for you and kitty.

Jennalee,
I am so glad to hear Toffee made it through surgery, I have been praying so hard for him. Now we all just need to pray that the biopsies come back normal.
JeN your description was so informative. I am treating a diabetic kitty, my second hyperT kitty, CRF, seizures, abscesses, acne, dental problems, and two FIV kittys, but fortunately never liver problems or cancer.
Jennalee, if Toffee is diabetic, I have been treating a diabetic kitty for 5+ years now. I'm here if you need me. We need to wait until all the tests are in, because kitties do have elevated blood glucose levels when they are stressed and little Toffee has certainly been that.
Jennalee, please keep us posted.

I know how you feel My dog has just been diagnosed with diabetes and is sugar level is 400. I am really worry too. During this time you must spend all the time with your pet and give them all the attention they can get. How can they do surgery when they don't even know what is wrong with your cat? If I was you I will not do surgery and you need to ask the doctor about the percentages of living for your cat. If its pretty high then you should do it. If its not high then you should just spend all the time with your cat.

I hope that your cat is OK. You are doing everything you can for him. Don't let him suffer any pain if the worst does happen, its the hardest thing about having pets.Maybe he is poisoned and they can do something. I don't know. Thinking of you. I Will give my cat a special pat from you and we will pray for you together.
My cat, Ethell made a specially loud purr as I was praying for you. I think she knew a speccial cat prayer of her own.
I lost a cat (Camp-puss) to a sudden cancer in1999. I wasnt going to get another cat but in 2003 a wet nasty hissing kitten evicted my old Jack Russel Terrier from her kennel. I let the Jack Russell ive mainly indoors after that but the bad tempered kitten thought indoors was a much nicer place than outside. She was so bad tempered, like a man with a hiangover so I called her 'Ethell' after ethyl alcohol becaise the hangover make you bad tempered. Gradually she became nicer and when I took her to the lost animals home to get her speyed they had to keep her for a week to try to find her 'owner' I can tell you that was one of the longest weeks of my life, just suppose after all that someone claimed her. Fortunately they didnt.
She is now the fattest lovliest cat who sleeps with me on my bed every night. sometime I wonder whether Camp-puss got fed up with waiting for me at the rainbow bridge and got reincarnated to come back to me. Both cats originally came to me as abandoned animals.Camp-puss was originaly found by some kids ona school camp abandond in a hessian bag, thats why I called him camp-puss. ( Not his sexual preferences )
Still thinking of you, glad you brought him home. You are lucky I honestly thought you might not be able to. Ethell is basking in the sun for Toffee.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes. And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you. Visit here : https://tinyurl.im/aH1a2 to find out what all the fuss is about.

Why don't you get clear on why the vet is performing surgery in two hours.
If this is an emergency then why wait two hours?
If it is cancer then Cats don't need surgery to diagnose cancer.
