It is human nature to attach a symbol to something that is meaningful. The concept of the cross being a symbol is used in the new testament mainly by Paul.

So we attribute it to God but in a sense it is idolatry. Additionally the cross is Tammuz's symbol from what I can gather but I'm not an expert on that.

I think the idea came from later when Constantine came on the scene. There is a legend that says he saw an image of the cross and was told to rule by it.

Earlier christians used an ichtys but even that had pagan origins.

I suppose that is why we aren't supposed to have any sort of graven images or representations of God. The only exception is our conduct. Our conduct should show God.

Look up Tammuz and the Vestal Virgins of Rome. The Tau Cross represented the name of Tammuz and it was also meant to represent the rays that you would see squinting at a bright sun.

Minucius had it right if he called it a pagan symbol

the cross was around thousands of years before chistianity. when the christians were "rising" to power, they took many diferent things that the pagans belived in, and symbols they used, and made them christian. and for all the fundie christians out there, do your research before giving a thumbs down. remember, christianity also used the pentacle for a while. some still do.

apparently the cross was already associated with christians by the third century. up until that point it was used by pagans.

it seems that others actually started connecting the two before christians embraced it.

i have only guesses as to why they decided to use a cross as their symbol.

:)

Originally it is not a cross, but a key. It is a symbol of the key to go to after death life. Rome change the symbol as they want to be.

Check Yahoo search how the symbol come from.
