Hi Cyanara
Overdoses of paracetamol are very dangerous, and survivors of overdoses have permanent liver damage.
Taking more than the recomended dose over a period of time will also produce liver damage, and it has been recently shown that long term use of paracetamol can cause liver damage.
It may be an over the counter drug, but it must be treated with respect - great respect.
As a matter of fact, taking 3 paracetamol tablets will NOT provide any additional theraputic effect than taking 2.
If I had it my way, I would make it POM.

The paracetamol can be dangerous but it is low aggressive towards the stomach.
Doses greater than four grams of the substance per day (based on an adult weighing 80 kg or more) are considered dangerous to health, with a toxicity that is targeted towards the liver with potentially fatal effects.
in according to me it is very hazardaus in long term use at the "safe" dose

It is a very dangerous chemical and if taken beyond the dose indicated can cause the liver to fail. Taking it over a long period, even at the proper dose rate can cause problems and it should be left off at regular intervals.
It has been used by suicides and the dying process is very painful and is in no way an instant job. It's effects once started cannot be reversed.

It's perhaps the safest drug ever made, but acute overdose is problematic, and even at a normal dose of a gram four times a day over a prolonged period, a few people have developed liver damage that may be from toxicity. There's nothing perfect in this world, but the risks with proper usage are miniscule for almost everyone.

I would say she's safe, if she hasn't taken a previous overdose in the past week. Liver damage usually occurs around the 30x500mg tablets, but, to be safe, doctors assume that liver damage will occur at 24 tablets or 150mg per kilo of body weight, which ever is smaller. Unless your friend is severely, severely underweight, like a bmi or around 10, I would say she's safe, unless she's taken an overdose of around the same size in the past week ish. A person's liver is a very resilient thing, it will heal itself given time. Also, if you call 999, she will feel like her trust has been betrayed, and she may never tell you again if she takes a larger volume. If she ever takes an overdose that is more substantial, then try to persuade her, and then, after telling her the facts and figures, if liver damage is going occur, and only once she knows how much danger she is in, should you call 999. She is safe now though. I have also taken 13 before, and I am fine :) Please, for the sake of your friend's trust, only phone the emergency services if she is in danger of liver damage. I wish you and your friend all the best :)

First of all, I am guessing by your question that you are in England, Europe or possibly Canada.
Paracetamol is basically what is sold in the U.S. as Tylenol or acetaminophen. As long as you keep your dosage BELOW 3 grams per day, you should be ok.
This particular drug, is very hard on the liver if you take too much of it. Paracetamol/Tylenol over dosages are notorious for killing your liver and leading to a slow, painful and protracted death if you do not get a liver transplant.
If over dosage is caught soon, it can be treated by giving a drug called N-acetylcysteine (NAC) by mouth. Be aware that it smells like sewer gas, and tastes just as bad. but it will prevent the liver damage.
Generally, however, if you take the appropriate dosage, it is detoxified and inactive in about 8 hours. Generally it is out of your system, depending on your dosage in 24 to 36 hours.

Is it hazardous in long term use at the 'safe' dose?

Overdoses of paracetamol can cause long term liver damage - and a very slow and painful death.
They are a wonderful painkiller used with respect, as are most drugs.
