Three of my associates bought this item and like it very much, it diffuses the light while having the ability to open the top and bounce the light. The newer addition, the Whaletail was purchased by a friend who also has the Sphere and they did not like the WT at all.

If you would like to make a cheap imitation and see the results try this....take a clean frosted quart sized deli container and cut an X in the lid, then cut a large circle out of the bottom of the container. Shove the Xed lid onto your flash which should be in the straight up position. Fire away. Also experiment with a slight tilt forward.

Not too pretty but it saves $50.

The LS scatters light and diffuses it for more pleasing portraits and less harsh shadows. It works great indoors at fairly close range. Outside it is all but useless. You do have to adjust exposure when using LS. There are several versions available. I use the clear one.
