I have 5 yamaha home theatre speakers. 2 fronts, 2 rears and a centre, lacking bass and needing a subwoofer but which?

You can buy nearly any brand of stand-alone subwoofers. They do not tone-match to any speakers, even the speakers by the same company.

For the budget minded, There is a Sony 150 watt unit sold at Best Buy that was surprisingly good for it's $140 price tag.

I bought a used Home Theater Direct sub and installed it at my mothers house. It was one of their level2 subs and it worked quite well.

2 very good internet sellers of subwoofers are SVS Subs and HSU Research. I bought SVS, but even the owners of the company praise HSU subs. (So it is a coke-vs-pepsi argument which is better).

Remember - it is the deep, low, not-boomy sound that tends to impress people. A good sub makes a big difference.

Might as well go with a Yahmaha. lol.

But, a nice woofer would be a Velodyne. Check out axiomaudio.com if you wanna upgrade to some nice hi-fi speakers at a reasonable price.

Velodyne has a wide range of subwoofers; That is all they do. If you go to their website at www.velodyne.com they have a wizard to help determine which one is right for your application. If you find yourself on a budget, there is also a close-out section. They come highly recommended.
