When throwing a punch, punch through your target, Fallow through. Of course keep defense in mind if you miss you need to recover quickly before you get countered. The over hand should come straight and your hips should turn giving you momentum and weight. Not every punch should be thrown as a knock out punch though. The heavy bag and upper body exercise would definitely help but proper form in punching is essential for power in my opinion but look at Liddel.

balance,balance,balance...watch beautifully balanced fighters with good footwork. One of the best I have ever seen is (our) Kostya Tzsyu. Keep your feet planted, don't bounce around wasting energy and hit like an uncoiled spring. Practise mentally too

work on your chest, triceps, biceps, and back. also, if you can find weighted bag-gloves they'll help you build power AND speed.

good luck, man!
