Stick to the basics ... some whiskey, rum, vodka, gin. Lots of mixers Coke and Sprite and Soda ... some juices.

Remeber you are not a bartender ... you just want to have a hell of a party and get everyone happy.

You should stock the basic spirits: Rum, Vodka, Gin, Tequila, Brandy, and Whiskey. (I would buy a bourbon whiskey as it is the most versatile for cocktails.)
I assume the goal is to make cocktails, so don't buy expensive bottles. Don't buy the cheapest stuff either. You shouldn't have to spend more than $15 per bottle on any of these. (Of course you can if you want to.)

You should also stock: Triple Sec, Vermouth (sweet and dry), bitters (Angostura Aromatic bitters are the most common), tonic water, club soda, cola, ginger ale, lemon lime soda, fresh lemons, limes and oranges, maraschino cherries, olives, coaktail onions, grenadine, and sugar or simple syrup.

All of that should come up just under $200 provided you have to buy everything.

Assuming you will have bought a few bottles of wine and some beer, you should can still buy a few more things to go the extra mile.

Maybe a few bottles of inexpensive champagne to make some champagne cocktails. Perhaps a bottle of Pernod or Herbsaint, both anise flavored liquers that can be used in lots of drinks. Creme de cacao can make some very interesting drinks. Maybe Kahlua or Irish Cream. Applejack. I would stick to just one or two of these things, but because of cost and because you presumably don't have time to learn that many drinks.

Familairize yourself with the following basic drinks, and then maybe choose a few specialties of the house based on whatever extra ingerdients you end up with:
Martini, Manhattan, Sidecar, Margarita, Whiskey sour, Tom Collins, Old Fashion.

Get:
1. Jager, It is probably the most asked for at the bar I worked at $20
2. Whiskey/Bourbon, be it Jack, Jim, Johnny or SoCo I'd buy black label on all. $20-30 ****and dont forget coke****
3. Vodka, dont know why but where ever I go vodka is there. $10-25 ****EXTRA: If you like Skyy vodka get Potter's Vodka same stuff just amor ugly bottle and 15$ cheaper****
4. Rum. Bacardi all the way Get premium silver and bacardi Select $16-25
5.Cordials. Like rumpleminze goldshlauger and Baileys $20 a pop
6. Gin. nobody really drinks it anymore but you need it for long islands iced teas $10-20
7. Dont forget Sweet and sour, grenadine, coke, 7up, and red bull
8. If you have money left i guess tequilia but dont buy cheap its all or nothing on this beverage and pick up lime and salt. also try pineapple juice with tequilia, it takes the burn away.

Now you have a well stocked mini bar.

i think the best thing to do is for you to make a drinks menu for the drinks you can afford/ and are willing to make and buy the alcohol for those drinks.

like vodka and orange
or gin and tonic etc
