Get a Good Night's Sleep...Give time for yourself and do something that will help you to relax....bath, massage, use lotions and oils and drink teas with lavender and chammomile...and other relaxing herbs...aromatherapy really helps. Exercise will really help relieve anxiety.....go for a brisk walk or swim if possible. Take a moment everyday to relax and breathe deeply. Pay attention to your breathing throughout the day-you might find that you hold your breath alot. Try to incorporate more vegetables and fruits and water in your diet and decrease the sodas and sugars. Smile and say hello to people and watch comedy shows and movies instead of the news. Whatever negative thing is in your life, try to make it positive or move along to something else. Someone mentioned that they never go away. I haven't had a panic attack in seven or so years. Definately try to stay away from anti-anxiety/depressants as much as you can. In my experience, it only made it worse....I took about 6 different medications...but everybody is different. I feel so much better without the medicine. Self Help Books are good...go to the book store or library and skim through to find one that suits you. I personally liked "The Self-Esteem Companion" which I believe has a lot to do with anxiety.

Panic attacks are not always a mental issue.

Sometimes, it's a symptom to a medical problem, like with the thyroids, hormone imbalance, or the adrenaline glands not functioning properly. So, the first thing to do is to see a doctor to make sure it's not an underlining condition that's causing them.

If there's nothing medically wrong, then try doing mediation. When panic attacks do occur, remain calm. Most people who have anxiety problems don't breath properly. Put your hand on your chest during a panic attack. You'll probably notice that your chest rises up more than out. Take deep, steady, slow breaths that make your chest rise out rather than up.

Also, try to figure out what's causing the panic attacks and work on moving past whatever issue it is.

Oh, and lay off of caffine.

Hope this helps!

First, how to stop an anxiety attack: you have to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. Do this by blowing a bag full of air, then keep re-breathing the air in the bag; don't breathe any fresh air until the symptoms go away. It works pretty fast; you will be breathing hard but you'll feel much better.
Then as to the matter of preventing attacks. That's a little harder. First, you need to remember that panic attacks are not dangerous and you won't die from them. Then, you need to associate hard breathing with something other than panic and distress. One way to do this is to do aerobic exercise on a regular basis.
Some people get excellent results from practicing breath-control disciplines like qi-gong.

Counseling.

I'm serious. Medication is only supposed to take the edge-off the worst of your symptoms. You also have to be in counseling/therapy at the same time. Why? Because if you never find the cause of your attacks, they will continue for the rest of your life.
Make an appointment to see a counselor. Don't say you can't afford it and/or you don't have insurance. If that is the case--you just contact your county's department of social services and they will give you the number for the mental health office......or you can look it up online.
Once you find the cause of these attacks you can find what triggers them and what to do when you feel one coming on. The counselor will help you to recognize the signs and triggers and teach you how to handle those situations.

Then? You won't need the medication anymore. Wouldn't THAT be great?

Just completely ignore them when they occur, think of where you are and what is happening, you know its a panic attack nothing else, so do your best to not let you scare you. I know from personal experience, once you learn to control them they will start to go away. don't fear them, confront them with reality.

quite a few members, in different generations of my family have panic / anxiety attacks. my brother is doing better, since he got his cpap machine. see we also have sleep apnea to go with it. some of us are on meds, due to the severity of the attacks, others with milder attacks, tend to drink calming herbal teas from the grocery store. my favorite is "tension tamer" & "sleepy time tea". deep breathing exercises, and meditation helps also. try to avoid stress, it's a trigger. don't forget your "me" time to soak in a hot tub, sit by the fire place, watch the sun set, or waves roll in from the ocean. i have sound cd's that work great for calming me down. i hope i was able to help some. they never go away, just lessen. take care

PRAY! Know that God will never bring you to something that he won't take you through. You can do all things through Him.
