If you need to choose between Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 Xbox 360 is better. Xbox 360 does have more violent games though, and is more based on violence than the Playstation 3. They Playstation also contains a good amount of violent games, but the 360 has more.
You can decide on your own what you want your children to see or not, the Xbox 360 is probably not as good for younger kids, but it is the better system.
For kids I would suggest a Wii as it is the best system of the 3 as it is (in my opinion), not just for kids, but for any age, and it also contains very, very, little violence, and anything you wouldn't want your kids to see.
A Wii is the best system for all ages (in my opinion), and i'm not saying that because it shows less violence, etc., I myself have the Xbox 360, i'm saying because it is extremely fun and unique with it's virtual reality, and the games have good graphics, and are fun to be incorporated in.
I personally wouldn't mind really giving a 6 year old an Xbox 360, but I don't know about you, so I gave you the facts.
Violence:
Xbox 360 has most
PS3 has second most
Wii barely has any
Best System:
Wii (although it is highly debatable with Xbox 360, I myself have a very hard time deciding, because both are amazing, when it comes down to it, perhaps Wii by just a hair)
Xbox 360
PS3 (this system is considered the worst by most, but there are lots of people that like it, so don't think that your son would be silly to like this one, because many have and love this system) (I myself would never buy the system though)
Money:
PS3-$600
Xbox 360-$450
Wii-$250
(May be wrong on the prices, i'm sure about PS3, and Wii and Xbox 360 may be $100 less)
Best Games:
Xbox 360
Best Online Play:
Xbox 360
Best Graphics:
Xbox 360 (PS3 has potential to beat the Xbox 360 at this, but is to lazy to do it)
Best Style of Gameplay:
Wii
Xbox 360 seems that it would beat the Wii by those statistics, but the Wii's gameplay is so outstanding that it definitely competes with the Xbox 360, and I prefer it, but only very, very, very slightly.

Well there is no simple answer, it really depends on what you want out of it and what you are willing to deal with. If you don't already have a game platform (xbox,ps2,gamecube) then it simplifies things, but if you do one thing to consider is whether or not you want to get rid of your old system and keep the games. Xbox 360 and PS3 are both backwards compatible, though neither are perfect. One thing to note is that the new PS3 40 and 80 gigabyte systems no longer employ hardware compatibility, they moved to software, so if you want to play an older ps2 or ps1 game you have to download it.
That being said, the xbox 360 is superior in the sheer number of games available for it, and it has some of the most popular games around, Halo 3 being the biggest. It also has Xbox llive which at this time is much easier to use than the PS3 browser plugin. However, the xbox 360 has been plagued with hardware issues, so much so that the gamestop I work at has stopped selling the extended warrenty on any 360. If you buy the 360 you really should buy a cooling fan, and never stand it up while playing, some 360's have the laser lens on the drive positioned too close to the disc so that any vibration can cause it to burn a disc making that disc unplayable. Also currently there is an issue with the led going red, and that is an instant ship to Microsoft situation, though my understanding is that over the next couple years microsoft will fix that problem for free. If you do go with the 360, dont bother with the 360 arcade, go with either the pro or the elite. The extra money for the hard drive is worth it completely.
The PS3 hasn't had any of those issues, though some of the very first units had small fans leading the PS3 to overheat. As it stands now, PS3 doesnt have the bulk of the games, or even the flagship games that the 360 has, but in time it will.. the 360 has had a year on the PS3 to build up its inventory. And the PS3 has a much higher capability than the 360, so in time the performance should outstrip that of the 360 at least graphically. The problem right now is, there isnt alot of games for a 6 year old on the system, so if you go PS3 you will probably want to get a 60gb system and buy some PS2 titles as well.
Another option is the Wii, which is perfectly suited to a 6 year old as far as a plethora of titles geared to that age group. Its unique and fun to play with its control system, but it does tend to get old and it just simply doesnt work too well for certain games. Still, it is the top selling platform of the three, and is fully backwards compatible.
My advice is to take your child to a gamestop and let her/him try out the three systems, while you check out the available titles that you think you would allow her/him to play. Also consider that the PS3 is a blue ray player, so if you want to dual role the PS3 into a movie player it has that built in, whereas to use the 360 as an HDDVD player you have to buy an add on.

Which one is better playstation 3 or XBOX? why?
ps3 is whole lot better then the xbox 360
why?
ps3 is gear up with wifi, cell proccesser and blue ray disc. The 4 layer blue ray disc can hold up to 100 gb in 1 disc.
As for a the xbox 360 it uses a dvd which can hold 10gb only yes it have a hd dvd add on but the add on is only for watching movies not for games the ps3 blue ray uses both game and movies.
ps3 is more advance and better then the xbox 360 that why it dont come with a cheap price.and the ps3 dont overheat like the xbox 360 did.
As for your six yer old child i recommend u to get a wii he's too young for a ps3 or xbox 360.
most of the game on ps3 and xbox 360 are very violent for a six year old kid.

What you really need to know is why does you 6 year old want a PS3. Not many kids that age run around wanting a PS3 or Xbox 360, majority of them want either a PSP, WII or Nintendo DS.
You need to try and ask him why does he want a PS3 is it because a friend has one, he wants a certain game or what ever it could be. As a few people have said PS3 and Xbox are really designed for the teenage market upwards while the other are based for the younger market and you can tell this by the games they bring out. Although saying that WII has really became an all rounder console for everyone.
The real thing is he might want the PS3 but as his mother you are the one that is going to be buying it for him so you need to look at price and what you think he wants from the console.
Get onto the websites, walk into stores, ask the sales men questions and see what you think about them because as i said what does you child want from it...

I believe that 6 is a little too young for those kind of systems. I think he would enjoy a more kid-friendly system before getting ps3 or xbox... get gamecube. The price has droped dramaticly since it's "older" but the games will be much better for a 6 year old, but more "airy" and something he can enjoy!
But, if I had to choose between the two, I got with XBox... I love mine!

PS3 is much better, but it's too much for 6 year old kid - most of PS3 games are not good for little kids (blood, gore, violence, explicit content). Wii is the best for kids, also games like Wii sports need some physical activities - this thing is just a lot of fun for little ones.

the kid asked for PlayStation 3.and its for Xmas so give him the PlayStation 3.or talk to him about an XBOX 360.but consider first what the kid asked for and try to prefer something he didn't think about....who knows...maybe he wants XBOX 360 more that PlayStation 3 but didn't remember about it.

PS 3 costs the same as xbox 360 now.
Get Wii for the kid. It's not powerful enough to overheat, or melt games, or any of that sort. Works very well, and has plenty of kids games for it.
