After reading this topics...I'm sure you'll want Vista

I bought a Vista enabled computer about 6 months ago, it has higher spec than my XP computer but runs slower, particularly when handling large files (apparently there's a known problem with data transfer).

Because Vista is resource intensive I'd suggest at least 1GB of RAM, if you often have several large applications running at once then I'd suggest 2 GB. If you don't have enough RAM then you're comp will really struggle, the hard-drive will be constantly hammered and you'll spend the day twiddling your thumnbs waiting for things to happen.

You could have problems with any existing hardware you have (printers, scanners, cameras etc), the problem being the lack of drivers for Vista. More drivers are becoming available but even so, I still have a printer and camera that remain connected to the XP computer (the printer is newer than the comp but isn't Vista compatible).

On the plus side, it looks nice with it's 3D interface, Windows Mail is a great improvement on Outlook or Outlook Express, Microsoft claim that security has been improved and it appears to be so, it has a handy search facility (type in a few letters and the search finds all programs, emails etc that match the criteria). That's really about it. For a programme that is so much larger than XP they don't seem to have added much to it.

I dare say there will be a Service Pack available at some point, that should improve the incompatabilty issues, iron out some minor bugs and hopefuully speed things up.

Overall - if you're going for a lower spec computer then stick with XP, if you're going for a higher spec then go with Vista but check the availability of drivers for your existing hardware first.

To list all of the bugs in Windows Vista would take too long, instead, let me list the features that are not messed up.
1. Win + Tab, the new Alt+Tab, it flips the images in a 3-D view so as to better see all your windows
2.Live Thumbnail, when you put your cursor over a minimized window icon on the taskbar, a little preview of what it is pops up
Thats it, almost all the other features are reeally buggy and you will have trouble until you get all the kinks worked out,
In my opinion, wait until Vista SP1 to decided if you get Vista. My belief is that Vista looks nicer than XP, but the system requirements arent worth it. Go XP if you have to choose one soon.

Depend if you have a high performance PC u need Vista, because more and more programs and games gonna be Vista Only soon. But Vista do gave you about 20% of slowed down when compare to XP when using the same software and same pc specs. Some older program don't work too well with Vista mainly the hardware like drivers.

Well, it depends. If you are thinking of upgrading, MAKE SURE your hardware will run it efficently. You need a good graphics card, a minimum of a gig of ram, and you need a good processor.

Vista is more secure and is definately a fun operating system, and if you are getting a new computer that has good specs, you should be fine with Vista.
