The subway runs along much of Ratchadaphisik Rd. and if you take the subway (or taxi) to the Petchburi subway stop you can take a canal boat on the Khlong Saen Saeb canal most of the way to Khao San Rd.. The end of the canal boat line is near the Temple Mount and is just a few minutes by taxi or tuk-tuk to Khao San Rd.. It's only about 15-20 minutes across town on the canal boat, by far the fastest, cheapest and most fun way to get there. You do need to switch boats at the Pratunam dock.
The Ratchadaphisik Rd. area of Din Daeng is somewhat touristy because of the many "entertainment" and nightlife venues in the area. There are many hotels and shopping in the area and has easy access to many other parts of Bangkok because of the subway which connects to the skytrain and the canals easily from the there. I wouldn't consider it to be in the middle of the tourist area, there really isn't a main tourist area, but it isn't a bad area to stay in.

Straight line distance is around 8km but time on the road will be quite awhile. Ratchadaphisek Rd is towards the northern part of Bangkok, before the old international airport, whilen you are looking at Khao San Rd to the west of the city centre.
However Ratchadaphisek may be of interest as there are many tourist establishments along the road. Night life is plentiful too, and you get more local flavours than at Khao San.

Probably a good hour away by taxi. Cost up to 200 baht, if they can use the expressway.
If you took the subway to Sukhumvit station and the skytrain to the national Stadium or MBK center. About 35-40 minutes total time. It's another 10-20 minutes by taxi. Total cost about 150 baht
It's not that far as the bird flies but, the traffic in Bangkok has gotten awful in the past couple years. I used to take taxis all the time. I work around it now.

remember there's a clean airport in bangkok now. The previous airport (don muang) has closed. A taxi to petchburi street from the recent airport with street tolls plus the recent airport taxi surcharge of fifty baht will cost 350 baht. in spite of the indisputable fact that why no longer take a bus from the airport to down city for fifty baht and a tuk tuk from the prepare staion for 60 baht,

Around 15 - 20 Kilometers.
Din Daeng is not the tourist district at all.
It is not very convenient to stay around Dindang and travel in Tourist spot.
Also that area has no sky train station.

it's at least a good 30 minutes by taxi if you pay the 40 baht extra for the express way, if not more depending on traffic and i don't consider dindaeng to be the center of the tourist district, it would be somewhere near Siam Center.
