Stovetop stuffing is awesome, especially if you prepare it first, let it cool down and then mix it with your meat. It comes out really moist and flavorful.

Depends ... if I have open crackers, I will use those up. Same with day old bread. Otherwise, I have a stash of bread heels in the freezer I turn to. I have been known to use both. I tend to prefer bread with a higher-fat ground meat. If your meat is a leaner grind, then I'd suggest crackers or a combination of crackers and bread. Crackers tend to have more fat than breads, so you'd be adding a touch of moisture (and your meatloaf will have a nicer texture).
Oatmeal would be a good filler or meat extender, but I don't personally think it is as good. If you do go that route, I would whirl the oats in the blender, season and treat like bread crumbs. Good luck!

You can use any of the three. I use whatever I have handy at the time. Here's a tip tho: if using the bread or crackers soak them in some milk for about 15 minutes, pour off any extra milk and then mix as normal. It will help with both flavor and moisture.
Oatmeal is more heart healthy then the bread or crackers, if that is a consideration for you, and it doesn't need to be presoaked.
Hope this helps.

I use oatmeal. I did bread crumbs for years but have now realized that oatmeal is much better. It is also higher in fiber and lowers cholesterol. Only the old fashion kind, never the quick cook or instant. Too mushy.

I use bread crumbs..I don't like the bland and sort of slimy texture that oatmeal seems to give my meatloaf. But that's just my personal preference.

okay, the things that you just have mentioned at called extenders, which increases the volume of your food. among the three, the bread crumbs are the most useful (thats why i use it more often, even in burgers) because they absorb the flavors of your marinades more, than your regular cracker crumbs. just be careful not to put it too much, because it tends to dry up your mix of meat and marinade.

I normally use seasoned bread crumbs. I am going to try a new recipe using Stovetop stuffing mix instead of bread.
