Ice road truckers are a bravest and in somecases the crasiest people around. They are the drivers who traverse the frozen lakes and rivers in Canada and Alaska prob even in Siberia. There is a certification to even drive on those roads. A regular trucker Joe like myself wouldn't be able to drive those roads. There is a technique of entering and exiting the ice so as to not create a wave underneath the ice that would break the ice at other edge. They have to know CPR and other first aid. Their trucks aren't the ones you see on the hwy either. THey have added fuel and heaters. Like the one poster said there was a feature about them on TLC

Typical truck drivers who drive on roads made of Ice, usually in the winter months of the colder regions, not standard ice on the highway, but a lake or pond that has frozen over and the ice is thick enough for them to drive the rigs across. Helps to get supplies to remote areas.

Men and women who love extreme's, living on the edge. They drive Semi's on 18+ inches of ice, to carry goods to diamond mines, in the most remote area's in NW Canada. So to answer your question, they drive on man made Ice Roads across large expanses of frozen lakes.
