Was there Islam before Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent as a prophet to mankind?

Brother Selim proposes this question because it is wonder what the following verse refers to: "(Ibrahim was not a Jew nor a Christian, but he was (an) upright (man), a Muslim, and he was not one of the polytheists) (Aal `Imran 3: 67)."

Islam is not a new religion because "submission to the will of God", i.e. Islam, has always been the only acceptable religion in the sight of God. For this reason, Islam is the true "natural religion", and it is the same eternal message revealed through the ages to all of God's prophets and messengers. Muslims believe that all of God's prophets, which include Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, brought the same message of Pure Monotheism. For this reason, the Prophet Muhammad was not the founder of a new religion, as many people mistakenly think, but he was the Final Prophet of Islam. By revealing His final message to Muhammad, which is an eternal and universal message for all of mankind, God finally fulfilled the covenant that He made with Abraham, who was one of the earliest and greatest prophets. Suffice it to say that the way of Islam is the same as the way of the prophet Abraham, because both the Bible and the Qur'an portray Abraham as a towering example of someone who submitted himself completely to God and worshipped Him without intermediaries. Once this is realized, it should be clear that Islam has the most continuous and universal message of any religion, because all prophets and messengers were "Muslims", i.e. those who submitted to God's will, and they preached "Islam", i.e. submission to the will of Almighty God.

"Muhammad (c. 570 – July 6, 632) was an Arab religious, political, and military leader who founded the religion of Islam as a historical phenomenon. Muslims view him not as the creator of a new religion, but as the RESTORER of the original, uncorrupted monotheistic faith of Adam, Abraham and others..."

"According to Islamic doctrine, Islam was the primordial religion of mankind, professed by Adam. At some point, a religious split occurred, and God began sending prophets to bring his revelations to the people. In this view, Abraham, Moses, Hebrew prophets, and Jesus were all prophets of Islam, but their message and the texts of the Torah and the Gospels were corrupted by Jews and Christians..."

"...the Qur'an states that the proper name Muslim was given by Abraham." [*]

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The reason God Mentions all these Prophets Peace be upon them in The Qur'an is because in Islam it is beloved that all the Prophets (pbut) all taught the same message and same religion. They were Muslims (meaning those who submit to the Will of God) by definition and all invited people to worship the Creator alone and do good deeds. For ex. Moses Peace be upon him in his Arcaic language from archeological findings called God El-Yah and Jesus Peace be upon him called God in his Aramaic language Aallah or Ellah if you look it up in an Aramaic lexicon and concordance. Also, you will read in the bible that all the Prophets like Abraham and Jesus (pbut) fell on their face and prayed like the Last Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him and Muslims. The Qur'an is believed to be the Preserved and Last Book of God. I invite all to read it with an open heart and see. May God Guide us all to what is best. Amen. In-Sha'Allaah (God Willing)

No, Islam as we know it did not exist before Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). The religion of Islam came with the Prophet and the revelation of Quran.
Allah (swt) says in Al-Ma'ida (5:3) "..... This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you , and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. ....."

Now the question about the earlier Prophets (pbu them) being called Muslims.
Muslim means one who submits to the one true God without associating partners to him. By this definition all the previous Prophets (pbut) were Muslims.

Similarly every child born is a Muslim.

And Allah Knows best.

Islam started with Adam (peace on him) the first man and prophet on earth. As is evident from your quotation of the holy Quran, Islam was always there. Now, look at the major religions that came to the land now broadly is 'Arab-land' (we cannot discuss all religions, because of dearth of time and space) are monotheists. Now, if one looks at these religions deeper beneath, one will see that they are necessarily talking about the same and only God. Given that, why one God should send different religions? So, the most logical conclusion should be that He has sent "one religion" and at different times human named it differently (to identify, to exclude others and to differentiate etc.). None of the religions asked man to disobey God. None of them said not to submit (complete and unconditional ) to God's Will. Complete submission to God's Will is Islam. A Muslim is he who submits to God's Will, unconditionally- Abraham surrendered to God (was there any conditions attached? None!).

Islam was created by Muhammad, ie before muhammad, there was no islam. To be a muslim, ie to believe in islam, one needs to believe that Muhammad is God's messenger. Therefore, before Muhammad, you can't believe that Muhammad is God's messenger as Muhammad did not exist.

Islam existed ever since man set foot on this earth. Adam, Moses, Abraham, Jesus (peace be on them all) were all Muslims. It is mentioned in the bible that when Jesus (peace be upon him)was put on the cross , he cried out "elai elai lama sabachtani" which means "My ella, my ella, why have you forsaken me?". Does "elai" sound like "god god" or "jesus jesus" or Allah Allah? The bible also mentions that moses washed his hands and feet before praying, which is just the way Muslims perform ablution before prayer. The bible says that Abraham, Moses and Jesus "fell on their faces" to their Lord. That's exactly the way Muslims pray.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioned that all prophets (including Moses, Jesus and Abraham) are brothers in faith (they are msulims). A Muslim simply is one who submits his will to God Almighty. Ofcourse, all the prophets were righteous men submitted their will to God.

Islam means "peace". Muslims greet each other by saying assalamu alaikum, which means "peace be on you". Jesus (peace be on him) says in the bible "blessed are the peacemakers". There are many , many more such instances, which will be too lengthy to put down right now. For more information, visit www.irf.net.
May peace be on you!

It would be better to find both civilized AND factual answers. But, the answer from Islam, is YES, these Jewish prophets, including Jesus (Peace be upon them all), are certainly TRUE prophets from the One God. The Arabic word for such believers is "Muslim". Anyone or any religion is free to claim them solely for themselves, but what I have stated is the true position of Islam for 1428+ years.

Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) said 'Jesus and I are brothers, and no prophet has come in the time since him and I (peace on them both)'.

The message of Islam is, 'There is no deity (god, or illah in Arabic)), but God (The God, or Allah, in Arabic, whether you are Christian, Jewish or Muslim Arab).

The English translation of the first commandment in the Torah/Bible is, 'Worship no god besides Me (God)'.

"There is no god, but God", is literally the most accurate translation of the Islamic statement of faith, as any average Muslim will tell you.

Peaceful wishes...
