Seriously, if I were ever arrested for a crime that I knew I was guilty of I would stay as silent as possible. What is it that makes criminals talk their heads off when questioned? What is so hard about keeping one's mouth shut?

Because people are not even aware of their rights. They are going through different stages of the arrest and have not had time to plan out a strategy. They think by telling the police anything it will be better than remaining silent. But the police are only their to make an arrest, and gather evidence against you. So it is best to just simply tell them you have nothing to say.

If it was a serious crime , You would talk too , because you are interrogated for hours ,and hours ..many of them talk just so they can go to the holding cell and get some sleep .. I have seen them keep people up all night long , in a small room , with no windows ...they yell , and cuss you , until they break you ..It is not always quick ,and simple as seen on TV . They will throw things to make you jump , they will do almost everything they can , except use the water boarding interviewing technique , that is saved for the very special criminals of a higher nature crime ..

Haha ive asked my self this before
They talk because it helps them Cope with
the thought of being Arrested, and going through the whole
process, they may also do it because it might help them
think that something will happen maybe a distraction like, if they get yelled at then that slows down the process!! lol =P

Arrested people always talk because they are trying to get a lighter sentence. Some people who are arrested will spill their guts, just because they are just ready to do their time and get out. I agree with you, I would definitely keep ,my shut.

Well, I would say, they just wanna run away and/or get away (do you get what i mean) and they just don't wanna stay in jail/prison, they want freedom. I know this by watching a Youtube video. The link is in source(s).

a lot of judgmental, self-righteous people on here. any actually ever been arrested..aka "stuffed and cuffed"??? from my experience, not all of us talk. some of us are actually quiet and "dummy up". i'm sure some people talk out of nervousness, or hoping the police will let them go. no one should judge unless they've been there.

Maybe they feel that they shouldn't have done whatever it is that they 'knew they were guilty of' and want to 'come clean'?

They think if they tell the police some info, they'll get off their punishment a little easier.
