i want to take the go train into the city, but it costs about $12 and i think that's ridiculous.
you don't need a ticket to get to the platform.. last time i took the train i bought a ticket, but i never actually USED it... no-one asked to see it

what'll happen if i don't buy a ticket? do they do random checks once in a while? what will happen if i don't have one?

If you don't buy one and ride, you can be arrested for theft. I would suggest that if you want to ride the train, you pay like everyone else...and that is NOT ridiculous

Most large staions have automatic barriers which prevent you from boarding or alighting from the train without a ticket.
Additionally ticket checks will usually be conducted on the train. In London and South East England and some other large cities, train operators are allowed to levy a penalty fare of £20 to those passengers who fail to show a valid ticket. Also boarding a train in Britain with the intention of not paying for your journey is a criminal offence for which you can be prosecuted

It depends on the railway you're cheating:

Here in California on CalTrain or ACE (commuter railroads), there are 2-3 conductors aboard depending on time of day, and they DO conduct random checks. IF they catch you without a ticket, they WILL have the police waiting at the next stop, and you'll be cited for theft and criminal tresspass... with a minimum fine of $250 (USD).

CalTrain arrests 3-5 people per day, and prosecutes them ALL.

Hmm...

Let's see....

1. You'll loose respect by others

2. You'll get ticketed or possibily arrested. Booked and charged with theft or tresspassing. You'll have to go to court and it'll be another waste of time in our court system and a waste of my tax dollars!

3. You'll go brag to your friends and they'll do it and then more and more people will do it and the cost of fare will go up for those that are honest

4. You'll go spend your $12 dollars on something you could have done without and paid the fare instead.

5. You'll go the rest of your life knowing you stole something and that everyone who reads this Yahoo board will know it too.

Pay the fare and be honest!

I don't know what you're grizzling about. $12 for a Train Ticket is cheap !

If you don't purchase a ticket for Train Travel, and get caught, you will be arrested, and handed over to the Police for the commission of THEFT. If you wish to avoid having a sort of tattoo across your life as THIEF, be obedient.

And purchase the Ticket.

SAVE YOUR BACON !

.. then you are committing the criminal offence of fraud.

The penalty could range from a fine up to a term in prision (YES - prision! There are examples of non-ticket holders having their freedom withheld from them.)
