Lets say this officer not only keep their nose clean, but, was actually quite a capable officer with no warnings, demerits or whatever they get for problems. The evaluations were always 4.0 (perfect), and this officer would be up for advancement at the earliest possible time. Lets also say there are to be no meritorious advancements for heroic behavior, just a standard advancement. How many years before they are advanced to Lt. Commander? A web site would be good enough too that details this time frame. Not just which ranks go in order. I don't need the best worded answer just the soonest! I've got $5 that says I'm right! And my neighbor needs to lose! ha ha!!!

5-7 years. no sooner than that.

ETA: Community Designator has a lot to do with it too. For instance, 85% of all eligible In Zone IWOs will be promoted to O4 this next cycle. for SWO, it may only be 60%. you may fail to select twice before you are politely asked to find another career( if you have over 15 years in, they generally let you stick around in dead end billets to finish out your twenty).

Last Cycle, nobody who was below Zone made it, but it has happened before. Usually when the need is extermely great.

Lt. Commanders usually have between 9 and 12 years of service when promoted to that rank.

Which means 5 to 8 years as a LT. before promotion.

Generaly, an Officer spends more time as an O-3, than any other rank.

First in a leadership position,(department head, etc.), then as a staff officer.

If you're an O-3... you certainly know by know your promotion schedule. And you also know where to find out what you don't know. Have you been deep-selected? Have you been passed over? What's your designator? What's your OBC?

I can't believe that a Navy officer ask a question like that on a site like this? Have you considered the official Navy web site?

I was in 25 years and retired as an 0-5... but I was a mustanger.

9 years total service would be the soonest a person would be up for O4. That's a front runner. 10 to 11 years normal path

Mrsjvb is right. O4 zone would be 5 to 7 years after the promotion to O3.

They used to be able to select a small percentage below zone. I've been retired 11 years and I don't know if they still do it.

Early promotes (fast-track) are looked at after 5 years as an LT (9 years total).

Normal advancement cycle, you are first looked at for LCDR after 6 years at O-3 (10 years total).
