hi, do you think that all automakers will quite making big SUVs in the future due to high gas prices? Ever since the excursion was taken off of fords lineup (which i always thought was a very very good vehicle) ive been scared that this could happen to all big supersized SUVs. because now that the excursion is gone i will have to resort to the new expedition el, which doesnt look as good or as big as the excursion, i just hope that ford makes the expedition el for a very long time. what do you guys think....will all auto makers have to give up the super sized suvs due to continualy high gas prices or will they stay around forever?

The excursion was dropped due to lack of interest on the part of buyers. If you considered it a good vehicle you are in a very small minority. The beast rode like a tank, took a city block to turn around and guzzled gas. It was brought out originally to one up the Chevy suburban, which IS a good vehicle. The Suburban may not have the greatest gas mileage but isn't bad considering the size. It's ride and handling are very good, whereas the excursion wasn't. So long as they sell enough of a particular model to make it profitable they'll continue to build them. If the customers don't buy them then they'll discontinue them, like they did with DeSotos, Plymouths, Oldsmobiles, etc.

Hard to say. If you look at the landscape, you'll see that every manufacturer that sells in the US makes a line of SUVs. Not just one, usually it's 2 or 3 per brand they sell. Who is responsible for that? Why, it's the buying public. That's what the American people bought to drive. So it really just depends on everybody else to buy the vehicle that you want to buy, so it stays on the market.

GM and Ford are nearly bankrupt, so they have to be careful. GM's big SUVs are selling well, so they'll have to keep making them. They don't have enough money to give up anything that they make a profit on. Ford is the same way - as long as they are making a profit on the Expedition they'll have to keep making it.

On the other hand, they'll eventually cancel anything that they don't make money on.

As long as there's a buyer for them they'll keep building them.
