The first Prussian Iron Cross / Eisenes Kreuz was awarded for Military Merit & Bravery, in 1813 after the Battle of Waterloo it was in First Class and Second Class.

(First Class are on a pin or sewn to the uniform the Second class hang from a ribbon.)

Again for Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a Black/White/Black ribbon
For Non-Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a White/Black/White ribbon.

It was reactivated for the 1770 / 1871 Franco-Prussian War again in First & Second Class.

Again for Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a Black/White/Black ribbon
For Non-Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a White/Black/White ribbon.

Further reactivated in 1914 till 1920 for Bravery in the First World War.
For Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a Black/White/Black ribbon
For Non-Combatant awards the Second Class was awarded on a White/Black/White ribbon.

In 1938 Adolf Hitler reactivated the Iron Cross but this time with the addition of a swastika on the front, he also raised the levels from First Class and Second Class
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross,
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds
Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.

The ribbon was changed to one with a thin black/thin white/broad red/thin white/thin black stripe.

Knights Cross awards were worn from around the neck on a broad ribbon.

In 1957 the German Government passed a resolution allowing old WW2 veterans to buy a new version of the Iron Cross WW2 versions (known as the 1957 Form) to replace any awards made in WW2 this had the swastika removed from the design and it was replaced with an oak leaf sprig, the date 1939 was placed in the center rear.

WARNING to potential collectors:

All types of the Nazi version have been / are being heavily faked so beware if you intend to buy one to research your subject well buy looking at reference books from the library or information from relavent websites.

The Medal of Honor is the US Military's top decoration for valor.

The Iron Cross is the German Military's top decoration for valor, but has not been awarded since World War 2. It came in several classes denoting the level of achievement:
- Class 2
- Class 1
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds

That last Iron Cross was quite a mouthful, wasn't it? Well, that's that.
