I always thought it was under the rifle category, but was denied purchasing it at Wal Mart today. (I'm 20)

It's both, but you have to understand that you are talking about Walmart here. They are so worried about liability their own policy teaches the clerks that it 22 ammunition should only be sold to 21 year olds. The Federal Law however states in the case of .22 caliber ammunition you must be 18 or older, not 21.....It's just Walmarts store policy nothing more. Next time you go back if you get another clerk, he/she will likely sell it to you without any hassle.....

I've had that issue at Walmart before and I looked at the clerk real funny when he asked if the ammo was for a rifle or a handgun (I'm only 18). But if they ask just say it's for a rifle anyway. The rule is a stupid one and if their concern is a lawsuit then they should start hanging a disclaimer.

It is considered either, but properly is a rifle cartridge; to-wit: .22 Long Rifle. And yes, they won't sell it to you until you're 21 merely because there are so many pistols n revolvers chambered for this round. Same thing with the .22 Magnum.

Sorry.

They denied it because it can be construed as a pistol ammo. Most place will sell it to you. It is a judgment call on ammo which can be used in pistols and rifles.

it's both. I don't know why Wal Mart wouldn't let you guy it, because I bought it when I was 18, with no problems.
