Not easy as a layman.

Try keeping company with monks & priests.

Their energies can help support one.

Remember 'it's a middle path'...

If you really want to counteract excessive tendencies; Buddhists have 3 contemplations on the topic.

1) Analysis of (into) elements (Dhaatu vavattana).

2) Contemplation on foulness (Asubha bhaavanaa).

3) The cemetary contemplations (Siivatikaa). (On impermanence).

If you email me, I can try & spell these out for you.

Be careful not to go to the 'other extreme' of 'hating', though - very easily done. :-)

Look at the situation....who is involved? If the person you are lusting after is already married, then you should really look at your moral values and it will lead you to the right decision to not "go for it". If the person you are lusting after is single, you need to speak to that person and get to know them better. Visual lust can go away if the person you are lusting after turns out to have a bad personality or is generally incompatible.Either way, you need to gain control over your feelings. If you have to, "relieve" yourself through masturbation in the privacy of your own home. Lustful thoughts can turn into bad obsession with someone. If it goes too far...seek counseling to help with your thought process. Good luck to you....

In terms of sexual lust, a man can masturbate. When a man ejaculates, hormones get released that instantly relieve the sexual desires. So a man might be thinking he wants to do some kind of sexual activity or whatever and he wants it so bad, but then the instant he orgasms... he doesn't care about it anymore. I don't think it works the same way for women. So I don't know what they can do. But women don't seem to be as sexually lustful in the first place. So I guess they don't need an outlet for their lust.

If you aren't willing to masturbate, then I can give you what works for me when I have thoughts I don't want to dwell on. I find distractions that make me think. Answering questions is an excellent one - I am here now trying not to think about pain - and so is writing emails, reading books, watching television, researching the answers to odd questions, reading poetry, trying to help others and putting myself in another's shoes to imagine what their life might be like.

The point is to get yourself thinking actively, on something other than your own thoughts and feelings.

Think about something else; do something else to occupy your time; call a friend to talk about your interests; avoid the person you are lusting after; don't look at seductive pics of people; don't let your mind go on with the thoughts; and above all else, pray for God's help.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life."

I guess it depends on what you're lustful about.
Are you lustfiul over lasagne or poontang or over-wiping your butt or murder?
If your lust doesn't hurt anyone but you, you'll get tired of it and move on or continue to hurt yourself.
If your lust hurts others you'll end up in jail.
If your lust makes you feel guilty and you fear for your soul, you need to assess my first two observations and decide if your religion serves your needs.
You don't need a Catholic Priest to absolve your indiscretions.

Why wouldn't you dwell? I've been married for over a decade. I relish my every lustful thought.

I share the following scripture to help you: James 1:14-15 - "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." Read God's Word and meditate on it continually. This is the only power you have against the temptations of the flesh. God bless you!!!

God can't be taken by surprise, and the Bible says we should cast all our cares on him, as he cares for us. So the instruction is to throw it to him for the power to deal with it (confession) - and of course it helps not to expose yourself unnecessarily or wilfully to the danger (repentance). When out for a walk we may find ourselves near a cliff but there's no need to settle down on the edge. It's also good to focus on something good that really engages us.

Don't be such a prude.
Lust is a part of life... you have to deal with it.
Either find something else to think about, or have a good "whack" (if you have the time and privacy) and then move on.
