I will eventually get a dog from the pound. I don't know when yet. But the shelter workers said if I adopt a dog I also have to buy a bag of Science Diet and keep her on it. Do I have to keep her on it for life or can I switch after a while? Will they come and take my dog away if they find out I am not feeding it Science Diet?

I am not against people who feed Science Diet. I would just rather feed something else.

What?

No, really...WHAT?

You were told you cannot adopt a dog unless you feed it science diet? Do they know what is IN Science Diet? Were you looking at a particular dog that is being fed Science Diet for a reason, or is this just any old dog?

Ask them if you can use Solid Gold or Innova. These are both MUCH healthier and more ethical brands of dog food.

I really love that you are rescuing. You get a lot of props for that. I also very much doubt these people would have the time to keep track of what you are feeding your dog.

Science Diet.

Haha. Wow.

I've never heard of that before. The pound making you keep a dog on a certain type of dog food. Yeah the Science Diet is good, but a little pricy. Now I don't know if money is an issue but I would think that after you take the dog home, it shouldn't be a probably to switch dog foods after you run out of the Sci. Diet. If they say something, tell them that the dog is health, no matter what kind of dog food it is. Good Luck!

Well this is what happened to me. When I adopted my rescue dog a few months ago, they gave us a bag of Science Diet too and the reason for that is that Science Diet supports the dogs' rescue charity I got my dog from. they told me it was good food for her age (she is in her senior years) but they actually did not specifically tell me she had to stay on it. In fact, I think she did not really like it so I gradually switched to another brand. I don't think they can legally make you sign something that says the dog will be taken away from you if you don't feed him/her Science Diet. What matters is that the dog gets proper food, shelter, care and attention. Science Diet is not a bad food though and certainly better than most supermarket stuff.

You do not have to keep the dog on science diet forever. You can gradually switch her to something better. It's just to not have people adopt the dogs then immediately switch them to something else, have the dog have an upset stomach, potentially have an accident and have it brought back (yes people do things like that.....) or fed something even worse than Science Diet. If you gradually switch her to something better (Merrick, Innova, etc) you will be fine. They're also probably hoping you will buy the food from them in the future if they offer that like alot of shelters are doing now.

first, good for you for adopting!!!!! Thank you for saving a life

i think it's so you can make a gradual transition if you do switch to something else.
Science Diet is one of the better brands you can buy, but it is very expensive.
When you do switch, mix 1/4 new food 3/4 SD for a couple days, then 1/2 and 1/2 for a couple more days, then 3/4 new food and 1/4 SD for a couple more days. Then you can use the new food. If you switch with no transition your dog will get diarhrea and might throw up b/c there stomach will get upset.

I agree, there are a lot of foods that are much better than Science Diet. It's not a particularly high quality food, and if you suddently switch to one that is more nutrient dense and has higher quality ingredients, there might be some digestive upset. Shelters are always strapped for funds, and sometimes manufacturers like Science Diet will come in and provide food at really reduced rates, in turn for the promotional value they get out of it.

I don't think they have food police that are going to come around and bust you for feeding Canidae or something similar down the line.

they wont take ur dog away. they just want the dog to stick to its regular diet for a while, then the longer u have the dog, u can gradually strt feeding the dog other foods by mixing the new food with his old science diet it food. gradually give the dog more

The point of this is that if you switch a dog immediately to a new food without switching food very gradually by adding very small amounts of the new food, then the dog will get diahrea and you'll have a big vet bill.
