On a perfect lie, a 3 iron and a 20* hybrid will get about the same distance, on good hits.
Hybrids are much easier to hit. They are much easier to hit out of the rough.

3 iron is heavier than 20 degree hybrid. I mean the club heads (iron is steel, hybrid can be a hollow titanium). Thats why you can get more club speed from a hybrid. Plus a hybrid is a half-wood. Means higher trajectory than a 3 iron. So if you are an amateur with 20 handicap, you will get more distance. However, it is not true with Pro-Golfers. They can hit 3 iron about 230-240 yards which is about the same if they use a 20* hybrid.

You do not get more distance out of a hybrid that has the same loft as an iron. Most amateurs prefer a hybrid because it is a lighter club and therefore they can generate enough club head speed to lift the ball during their shot. I do not carry any hybrids, I prefer the feel of irons but I generate enough club head speed to hit the irons correctly.

My hybrids are simply more forgiving. When I use a three iron it is only for wasting my golfing day. Even when you hit bad shots with a three hybrid, they tend to roll farther, and come off straighter. The Iron will only go farther if you are a scratch golfer. otherwise the hybrid will be the better option every time. I have hybrids from 2 iron to 5 iron and will never use anything lower than a 4 iron again. The only time i even use the 4 is when i want to ensure I don't carry too far. otherwise it is hybrid every time.

For me, the hybrid's main purpose is to increase the %'tage of well-hit shots.
For example, my 8 iron. I can hit it 150 yards about 95% of the time with a dispersion of about 15 yard diameter. I can't do that with my 3 iron; 30% at best. However, the hybrid enables me to to hit the ball to where I want about 90% of the time to about 200-210 yards with ok dispersion (too much to ask for 15 yard diameter dispersion); I get the ball on the green quite often then not.
So, to answer your question, does it help me hit farther. No, it gets about the same distance as my well hit 3 iron but I get much better result from it.
Also, I have learned long time ago, distance is good (you need it to get on the green, but accuracy and consistency (I call the the 2 "-cy's") gets you the low score.
Good luck.

I was to get more distance from my hybrid. For some reason I could not hit my 3-iron. I traded it for a the equivalent hybrid and gained about 5 more yards than I thought I would get (~15 yards greater than my 4-iron).

Personally, I hate hybrids. I hit my 2-iron much better than a hybrid. The trajectory is a little to high for my personal taste. I hit my 2-iron with a good trajectory, out of the rough though, I prefer a nice cut, and cant seem to hit it with a hybrid...Golf is a matter of personal preference, and that is mine.

I find the ball flight of the 3 iron higher than the 22deg hybrid I have. I suppose more penetrating ball flight does = longer distance.

Actually it is easier to hit, I hit mine straighter and farther. It's better out of the rough, too. Very few thin shots with my hybrid.
