I think I know what you mean when you say "overheat", but it doesn't mean that there is a problem with the PS3.

First of all, it's normal for the PS3 to get very warm after just about 20-30 minutes of using it, the PS3 is just a console that operates pretty warm.

But if the PS3 is confined in a small space and isn't getting the proper air flow the green light on the PS3 will flash yellow or orange and the system will shut down ( this hasn't happened to me, I read it in the user's manual). But a PS3 will not overheat if it gets the proper air flow.

What do you mean over heats? It should flash lights in the front when it is getting too hot which means shut it down.

If you have the ps3 in a confined space that doesn't allow fresh air flow and causes the heat to back up into the system it can get really hot. Take it out of the entertainment center . Thousands and thousands of ps3 are on 24 hours a day running the folding@home program and have been for over 7 months and none of them have had problems.
