How many in the states THINK they are ..... 55%
I can't even imagine how small a percentage truly are followers of Christ. However, when Elijah thought he was the only one left who believed God, God replied, " Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him. "
Still, seven thousand isn't really a lot in comparison.
May God bless and keep His remnant safe unto Him, wherever they may be.

This isn't really an answer to the question, just an observation of the previous answers.
How odd that the stats tend to show around 80%-90% of Americans as professing to be Christians, but the perception (of the few answerers up to this point) reflect the true number as low as 5%? That really says something about how the other 75%-85% of people who claim to be Christian carry out their lives.

Canada 20%
Our nation is 50% Roman Catholic. In francophone Quecec it may be 95% RC.
But RC folks don't believe in tithing, so the local St Michael's Roman Catholic church, and their manse and St Michael's Catholic Seperate School all have "for sale" signs, here in Dresden, Ontario.
I'm an ex-Catholic living just 3 doors down the street from the priest's manse.
I used to be jealous of all the cars at their church, when I went to my smaller assembly.
But our expenses are more than covered, and we are big on missions too!
Despite the fact we support a pastor, and his wife, and their 4 children (6 in all), compared to just their one priest!
We also supported an assistant pastor for 3 years, to which our family pledged extra giving. I guess you can't tell a book by the number of cars outside (to mix a metaphore).
I created a web site for our church's "Missions" work in 2006...
http://pilecki.homestead.com/GlobalMissions.html
Our missionary Aaron Pilon is the grandson of our neighbour and church-mate Sally Pilon.

Australia -
Approx 75% call themselves Christian
However
only approximately 9% of Australians attend church each week.
Allowing for those who just attend out of habit and have no real relationship with Christ the number could be as low as 5%

Latest statistics for the U.S. show about 17 million "born again", fundamentalist Christians. That's out of 300 million people. So, a little more than 5% - it just seems like more because they are so annoying.
