I REALLY miss being in the Coast Guard. I was discharged because of a problem i have with my knee. I have heard rumor it is possible for me to re-enlist. I dont quite understand how that would be possible. I don't remember the code on my dd-214 but it is a honarable discharge with medical listed under description. So i did get a fully honarable discharge. I was discharged back in february. I wouldn't mind going in the CG reserves but with my knee i dont think i would ever get through boot if i had to go to boot my run time is through the floor I basically only run now if i was in a burning building But i miss the military a lot.

TY for the info. My knee is still a huge problem for me so i am guessing that I really would not be able to go back in. I really miss the CG and the extreme organization. Working in the civilian world is a mess i dont know how my place of employment even stays in business. I will have to see what i can do maybe if i excersize enough i can build up enough muscle around my knee to make the lack of cartalige less of a problem.

I'd suggest a recruiter. And I'd suggest you go in ready to sign a waiver. The military doesn't want to take care of your bad knee for the rest of your life should you become incapable of performing your duties because of it; You might have to promise not to hold them responsible.

Dig out your DD214 and get the reenlistment code (the one that starts "RE-_" If this code is "RE-4" you shouldn't even bother trying because this means "Ineligible for Reenlistment" unless approved by the Chief of Naval Personnel -- or whatever your service equivalent is. In the 13 years I have had the privilege of serving the Navy, I have seen 0 people who received an RE-4 be approved for reenlistment. Doesn't mean you can't try, but chances are nearly nil.

Now, if you have an "RE-3_" you might have a shot. This means that you are eligible for reenlistment except for whatever factor that caused your separation. If that factor has been remedied, then you are eligible for reenlistment. But it sounds as though your knee was what separated you and if it is still a problem, then most likely you'll be denied.

One other note, your Honorable discharge is the characterization of your service, not a reason. There is no partial or full Honorable discharge. So the benefits of an Honorable discharge (GI Bill, if eligible, etc) are there for you.

Good luck!

Update: I did not realize your SPD was JFL. This code will make it more difficult for reentry because your separation was a disability separation and you received severance pay for it. Although you will not have to pay anything back... don't worry about that... an injury that was classified as a disability will be scrutinized a lot more than another "condition."

Have you ever thought about a GS position with the Department of Defense?

Talk with a Coast Guard recruiter and ask him. If you still qualify, I'm sure they'd to speak with you.

not without proving the reason you were discharged is no longer a factor.
