I was wondering if the 40gb ps3 ( the $399 one) plays regular playstation 2 games? Please answer, real important =(

No it doesn't - none of the previous chips from PS2 are left in it. NTSC 60GB is the best - it had PS2 CPU (Emotion Engine) and PS2 GPU (Graphics Synthesizer) - almost all PS2 games work on it. 80GB has only PS2 GPU (Graphics Synthesizer) - around 80% run, software instead Emotion Engine. 40GB doesn't have anything, only PS1 games can be played.

unfortunately, it does not. however, it does play original playstation games. if backwards compatibility is your main concern, i suggest you dish out an extra 10,000 cents and try searching for a 60GB PS3. the 60GB is more compatible with PS2 games than the 80GB.

THe 40 gig doesn't play ps2 games but it plays ps1 games. THe 60gig US and 80 gig play ps2 and ps1 games.

Yes, But it depends on the game though. I have a PS3 and you can't play the Gitar Hero games in it . There are probably other games like that
