Pressure of air acting over an area will generate a force. As PSI equals Pounds per square inch, a one psi pressure applied to a 2 sq in area generates 2 pounds of force. Increase either the area or the PSI pressure and the resulting force increases.


The fan you have probably generates a pressure in "inches of water" so to lift its weight of the hover craft your area under the fan will have to distribute this pressure over a large enough area to generate the necesary force.

I suppose it's the concept that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case, the force from the hovercraft blowing down on the surface lifts the hovercraft off the surface.

Downforce of the fan must be equal to the weight that the fan is lifting.
